I have an 1884CC GSA Morgan, I've taken this coin (Still in its case) to a local dealer to have it looked at. I'm not an expert, so I have a few questions. He says it's a " VAM" coin? And there is clearly what looks like a crease from the the bottom star all the way up to the 5th star on the side of the coin, which he says was done by the die when the coin was struck. The said crease is visible using his eye piece. My question is, is this a " VAM" coin or just an error coin. And if it is, what exactly is a " VAM" coin? Thx  |

 to CCF! First off, all Morgans & Peace dollars are VAMs. Some are more desirable than others & some carry a higher premium. VAM World is a great site for attributing your Morgan. It is set up by date & mm. There will even be pictures of some to help with attribution. But, for us to help, we will need much better pics of the obv. & rev. to include pics of the area in question. to the World of Vamming. Now your hooked.  I did a little checking w/ your description of the die crack around the stars. Here's what I found VAMs 2, 3, 3A, 7A, 8, & 10A. Start w/ these. The plus side is there is only a few VAMs listed for this date & mm. But, some like the 1921p have over a hundred. Edited by chris12018

There are few known vams (10 varieties)for 1884-CC, Why he didn't mention which one is unknown. a few pics will have it solved...The die cracks in the stars are a secondary attribution, the real points of interests are the date and mint mark placement along with those cracks..

This is the best I could do with what I have. Again, I'm not an expert, just looking for some info. Thx everyone for your great response's. Here is the area in question, you can see the lines going from the stars on the left and right, also there is a line going in the date. Not sure if you can see that or not. Hope this helps.  |

O.K., I have now joined the VW...lol. The info on the VAM 8 was extremely helpful as well, thank you aladinslamp !! After long and careful research on this site, I'm still a little bewildered. Although my coin fits VAM 8 to a Tee, it also has some characteristics of VAM 3 such as Die chips on the inside of the first 8 top & bottom. Also has Die break on left wreath top. And it has a counter clash doubling at the back of Phrygian cap ribbon, which is consistent with VAM 3A. From what I've read on VM I found this: 1884-CC VAM-11 (Eliminated, same as VAM-3.) So, all this being said, doesn't mean my coin has these features, again, I'm not an expert. But I can see the markings on the coin. And I'll do my best to get a better camera, to get any better pics. Is it possible for a coin to have diff. VAM features? Or should I just take this thing to a certified dealer and stop confusing myself lol. Again as always, any info given is greatly appreciated ! |

VAM 3 is very much like VAM 8, one of thin things you will learn is all things like the small clashings you are seeing are NOT always listed as they are not letter transfers which is usually the rule for VAM number assignments,. so by them selves are not worthy of a VAM designation, its just part of the learning curve... the rule of thumb is to study the date placement and then the mint mark location, and I believe there is a real difference between the two, but you have no photo's listed of that to make a final determination... the good news is your well on your way to figuring it out..  vam 8 is a tilted left mint mark and the 3 series is a "set" left mint mark..G

On the obverse side of the coin, the marks that are circled are the ones for the Vam3 & Vam3A I believe. Also the marks inside both loops on the first 8 in date. As far as the back reverse goes, I can't tell if the mm is tilted or not. I can't tell it when I look at another coin that has tilted mm's.

Thank you for all the helpful info on this coin and the world of VAM all together. I will continue to research all my Morgan's now, cc and the others to see just what I have hiding in my collection...lol. Thanks again. |
