OK, I received the coin today. It is not quite as clean as I thought. The picture is taken through the plastic of the Carson City GSA holder. Also, please remember my photography skills are literally nonexistent. So what do you think?

Nice MS63 from what can be seen. The shadows in the pics could help or hide so MS63 seems like a safe bet.

Thank you all for your feedback.
The next question: Do you think it is worth sending it in to a TPG?
I know it is bad form to mention dollar amounts, but I am not ashamed to say I paid a little under $190 for the coin (including shipping.)

You got a good deal! Here are numismedia's 1882 (common) Morgan GSA CC values; MS61 $234 MS62 $240 MS63 $263 MS64 $300 MS65 $538 ...unless it gets attributed as a VAM, then the values are obviously higher. ANACS and NGC would place a label on the original GSA holder, PCGS would crack it out. I sent my 1884-CC GSA (unattributed VAM 2 ) through ANACS, very common MS62 result for a $14 submission.

Quote:oih82w8:...unless it gets attributed as a VAM, then the values are obviously higher. I have been looking at the coin quite closely with my USB microscope and I have found a 'double/parallel line' die crack on the top of the left wing and another similar die crack right below the top of the neck on the obverse. A lot of what looks like 'marks' on the coin are actually in the plastic holder.
I am already a member of NGC... but I would want the coin cracked and put into an NGC holder. Which TPG do you think 'may' give the higher grade? I guess I could send it to PCGS, but I really don't want to have to join them as well...
I am leaning towards MS64, but that holds absolutely no weight as an opinion. Maybe if I am REALLY lucky, it might make MS65, but I won't be holding my breath on that wish.

There is no need to crack the coin out of the holder. Both NGC and ANACS will certify the coin in the GSA holder and put a label on the holder with their opinion.

Great deal! Seller must have gotten it confused with an 1883 or 1884. The 82's are a bit more scarce and valuable.

I'll go with the consensus of MS64 - Nice coin.

For someone who has nonexistent photo skills, you have captured the cartwheel lustre remarkably well. I think I can see a small dig between the 'U' and the 'S' of 'PLURIBUS', but that could be a dust particle on the slab. I see numerous very tiny nicks across the whole coin. It is much harder to keep this type of marking off dollar sized coins of any country, than for smaller coins. Nevertheless, I would go with MS 62 or 63.
