Hello, Here's an 1837 half dollar I am thinking of sending out to PCGS for grading. It has a nice, overall original appearance in my opinion and could go EF-45 or AU-50. However, it has some old hairlines and I'm wondering how likely it is to be rejected by PCGS (or another TPG). If it were mint state I'd think body-bag for sure, but as a circulated coin maybe it's OK. These photos really maximize the marks and hairlines, so I'd say they represent the worst-case scenario. What do you think?

I would have to say very high EF, Maybe AU, but that may be a stretch. In looking at examples on Heritage, it seems that many that are graded by the top TPG's have these same hairlines with no note of "cleaning" per say. There are some with it, and some without. Not sure if that helps, but it may be worth comparing your coin in hand to their pics. Hope that helps.

I wouldn't worry about the hairlines. The toning on this beauty shifts focus to the fields. The devices look pretty good...too bad the toning doesn't cover the whole coin..throw her in an album and leave it under the mattress for a year. Your grades of xf-au are pretty accurate, but it all depends on what day you submit it.

The services could go either way on coins like this. I had a 3CS that was a pretty rare coin (1867 AU) that PCGS bodybagged for cleaning. There were some hairlines but it didn't appear abrasive. It appears to me that the coin was cleaned at one time and the services may not be so lenient.

I think I'd send it, and be perfectly happy with it whether it came back in a slab or not. Sure looks like original skin to me, so if it was brushed, whoever did it had no idea what they were doing.

If you really want a slab and thats important to you then you could take the safe route and submit it to ANACS or NCS (division of NGC). If there has been a cleaning then they still slab it and note the cleaning.

I think it is cleaned (nothing unusual about that with early halves). The high relief features seem kind of granular in addition to the scratches. I would recommend ANACS if you want it slabbed.

I have to say I don't think it will make it in a PCGS slab, the hair lines will probably keep it out but I would enjoy the coin outside the slab more anyhow
