So is it genuine? I think not even prior to investigation since it comes from China. If I am correct what are the telltale signs.

Other than appearance, lots wrong with this coin. I would probably stay away.

The pole is wrong, The face is wrong, The hair near the brow is wrong, The 2 upper leaves at 12 o'clock on the REV are wrong.

The placement of 1/100 looks wrong, but could be more of a variety difference.

I still think the overall appearance looks like a cast counterfeit anyway.

I compared to this coin - http://www.coinfacts.com/large_cent...arieties.htm

Wouldnt this coin be in a NGC/PCGS/ANACS slab if it was genuine? It would be worth a minimum of $2,500; not exactly the type of coin left unslabbed.

China manufactures fake third party slabs to put the fakes in as well. I think that this seller has a couple questionable slabbed coins up for sale.
Here are educational links to counterfeit graded coins.
PCGS

and
NGC

I reported this seller using several avenues but it is still up for sale and getting bids.

Aye, this one is screaming fake to me. The knobs and pitting in the fields look like buffed down casting artefacts. The strike also looks "off" to me. I'll have to take a closer look when I'm at a larger screen.

My first clue that this one is a fake, without knowing what country it came from, were the casting marks left behind. Knowing that the coin is from China is a good enough reason not to purchase. Anytime I come across a coin from China, I realize that the chances of it being a fake are too high. I cannot take that chance regardless how good a coin looks.

I'm still somewhat of a novice, but, wouldn't the denticles be much more pronounced in a coin that had this much detail? That was my first indication that this was a cast fake. Aside from that the placement of the One Cent on the reverse looks way too high. Some parts of this "coin" look mint state while other details look VF-20.

Never buy anything being sold from China unless you are looking a fake.

I would also agree that the coin would have more than likely been graded considering its value if real

Aren't the original coins better struck than this? The date is rather weak for an otherwise good grade.
I suspect a lot of early cents will be faked, because collectors look for a "bargain".

If this piece was a fake it is SCARY good. The ONLY thing I could see that would make me suspect the coin was a fake was the weak pole. It does come like that on late states of this variety, but in those late states there is also sinking in a few areas of the die that are not present on this coin.

I would be leery to buy any classic coin from China. Something like that I would want to see in person and only buy from a reputable seller.

if they're sold as a replica and have COPY stamped on it that's another thing. A few dollars can fill a key date hole in your album until you can afford the real McCoy.

The problem with Chinese sellers actually selling the coins as "Copies" and
holding the auction with the picture of a coin stamped "COPY" is that the
coin you actually receive will often NOT be marked as a copy. If you request
it is not marked, it will not be marked! So even following ebay rules, these
things are getting out there. Sad.

And I thought that ALL coins from CHINA were minted with the CC mintmark, reguardless of the date on the slug (oooops, meant to say coin)...
