As mentioned in another thread, here is a recent purchase. This was a mint-sealed bag, bought in 1964, and it sat as a door stop for 48 years. I just cut the lead seal on the bag, and opened it. The coins that are toned, are from being in contact with the insides of the bag.

Now, the fun begins. Since it is a common year, I will only be searching for errors and really gem strikes (MS-66). Die clashes are just too common, and there is no real demand for MS-64 and MS-65 grades.

Most of the mint errors we know of, from the 1960s to the 1980s, came out of bags like these.

This is my version of roll hunting... except everything is bright and shiny. The toned coins will go to the bank, I will put together some grading sets for the Ottawa Coin Club and rest I will probably sell by the roll or by the pound.

I bet you will find some beautiful 1964 extra buds/stems to add to your collection. I'm very jealous. I would love to get my hands on a nice MS example. If you find some...and I can't imagine you would not...let me know if you would be willing to let one go and at what cost.

A bag like that is a roll hunters wet dream. :)

Good luck and have fun.

I had three 1963 bags ($20). Each took me two days to go through, about 8 hours in total per bag.

I'd love to get a 1962 or a 1964 bag!

What surprised me was the number of coins with black fingerprints on them!

When the term 'bag marks' is mentioned this is how they are caused. The finished coins are just spat out of the coining presses at a great rate of knots, directly into a receivibg bag, such as this one.

Newly made coins that are collected and rolled sustain far less damage before they leave the mint.

SPP-Ottawa, I take it you don't hoard copper since you're taking the toned ones to the bank?

No, I don't bother hoarding copper. Frankly, it is not worth it for me. So, my bank returns will be some future coin roll hunters' find...

Any results as of yet or is the bag still sitting there waiting for you to send it to me to search through?
