My dad's birthday is coming up. I want to get him something nice. He said to me he wanted a Sanding Liberty Quarter. I found a Type 1 1917 graded MS63 FH (Full Head) graded by PCGS. The owner will see it to me for $300.
I am not familiar with the older American coinage.
Is this a good deal or not? I know they are a rarer coin.

I would be quite happy with a 1917 Type 1 in MS63FH at $300. Indeed, it's a bit low - ensure the coin meets your "attractiveness" test before purchase. It's essentially "FH for free," as non-FH examples tend to go at that price.

I agree, it's quite a good price, assuming it looks how you'd like (e.g. it doesn't have ugly toning).

Yes, a picture would help a lot in determining its value.

I'll see if I can get one. Seems a little odd to me to go into a store and ask to take a picture. Maybe dealers are fine with it? Never tried.

No real need; it's not like an ugly coin wouldn't be obvious to you. The price is nice, and one rarely sees truly egregious errors in a PCGS slab. And PCGS is known to be pretty strict on FH designation. Just look at it and think to yourself, "Would I be happy with this coin?"

I ended up buying it for $290. When I went back in to look at the coin it looked real nice. A little toning around the outside but not in a bad way. My father was very happy to have it as he had been wanting to get one for years.
I tried taking pictures to post here because I am also pleased with the coin but both my cameras focused on the plastic slab instead of the coin. I will experiment and try again later.
Thanks for the input.

If you divulge the serial number of the PCGS slab, sometimes they take images (NGC does more images) when certifying coins.

This was a real pain because none of the pictures would turn out. The camera focused on the case instead of the coin in all the other shots. Here is the front though.

Gorgeous coin. I would jump all over that at $300. Really strong details.
