Hi Goatieman23,

Have noticed over the last few weeks on ebay that the $5 last prefix HB08s are going for $40-50 and upwards (last year they were about $20).

Any ideas why the price jump all of a sudden?

I have been shocked by the prices some of these notes have been going

$5 last prefix HB08 $81 (auction yet to finish)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5-POLYMER-N...em2a1db2cab8

$10 first prefix AA08 $152.50 (auction yet to finish)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-POLYMER-...em27c72ee9c8

$10 last prefix DF08 $161.50 (auction yet to finish)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-POLYMER-...em27c72eeb53

What is going on here?
All these notes are way over book price already, which is very unusual for polymer notes.

Maybe Goatieman's passion has sparked an interest in these notes

Those prices are a bit ridiculous,I've been contemplating selling my whole note collection so maybe now it is time.

With a bit of luck my passion has sparked interest in these notes. All I can say for these notes is:

I've been looking at the 2008 $10 first & last, because I guy wanted to buy one from me. To me:
Number 1) it's one of the lowest (4th lowest out of 10) $10 print runs.
Number 2) There were only 654,499 of each the first & last prefixes printed.

As for the 2008 $5 print.
Number 1) Only 442,999 of the last prefix printed.
Number 2) Maybe because it's a more collectable price point.

I figure that people collect what they can afford, rather than what they're willing to spend. Like, for instance, the majority of us are prepared to spend quite a bit on our collecting addictions.
When I've got cash flow going well, I've got money to spend. When I don't I have to sell to spend, but I will still spend.
As for others that may just collect type notes e.g all $5, all $10 etc. It's a lot more affordable to start a $5 collection from scratch & with the economic trends, perhaps this is playing a part on how people are investing...rather than bricks & mortar in silver &/or gold.

I guess the biggest thing as far as polymers that I go out & source are the scarcest notes. e.g $50 JC98 where only 39,999 were printed & you can only wonder how many still exist.

A $50 DA96 just sold on ebay for $135.83
Condition stated as VF. When you don't know much about notes you can sell it for whatever grade that someone believes it might be worth. This person's listed that McDonald values it at $680+ in the current book...I can't see that, all I see is $350 for VF or $150 for F which is more likely the grade that it is. Below is the only picture that was with the listing, mind you listed via ebay mobile!
$5-Hb08-Prefix-Prices
The link for that item is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...p=true&rt=nc
I'm not looking to put down this guys item...but some people seem to get too narrow minded & don't tend to trust anyone in the industry we collect in, probably for the right reasons, but when you're buying fake errors & date-altered coins at top dollar...then the $ is worth more than the $.

That could be what's calling the shots?

It could be the 2008 $50 MD08 which is calling the shots with an extremely small print of only 49,999. They're already selling for stupid prices on ebay, but for the scarcity, you could only expect people to want it more. Below are two that are ending in the next 20 odd minutes so have a look.
Single $50 MD08:

Consecutive $50 MD08's:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Australia-R...em27c73d89a7

As for the note dealer quality_notes; I wouldn't deal with him again. I brought two JC98's from him, one which was apparently strict UNC & the other vUNC (virtually UNC) for a decent dollar $3,950 (I was prepared for book price). I got them & the UNC had an indent (which to me makes it aUNC (because vUNC doesn't exist) & the other had a couple detracting points which would have put it in a high EF, probably a gEF. So to me they were only worth $2,050. I ended up getting a refund...eventually & two weeks later I guy I knew sold me two perfect UNC JC98's for $4,000. Moral of the story, some sharks will try & rip you off if you don't know your grades, so look under every light!!

As for the jump, I think everyone's starting to finally get into the polymer's after initially hating them. I love 'em! Polymers make me go .

Hi folks,

Thanks for the feedback - I think my hand will stay in my pocket at those prices. May need to try and unearth some other "diamonds".

Pedro, do $5 bank runs...you might just find a few goodies. I've found plenty of BA & HB's in the past year just through common change & money that's come through the till. I've found a few EF-UNC & an average HB06 999855. See how you go. 2006, 2007 & 2008 all have BA as first & HB as last prefix in the $5 denomination.

Another thought as to why they could be selling for so much is because no-one has listed them. Supply & demand, there seems to be much more demand than supply at this point. Ideally if there were 10 sellers listing them in auction at the same time, they wouldn't sell for too much.

Hi Goatieman23,

Still working up to this noodling caper! I have picked up a few 2006 - 2008's BAs from change which has been handy but so far only the one HB08 (it was in about uncirculated condition so I was a happy little vegemite).

A few more HB08s going up for sale in the next week so it will be interesting to see how the prices trend from here.
2007 $5s sales even lower in number so will be keeping an eye on them too.

I've been keeping an eye on the ebay prices of HB08 $5 and DF08 $10 and they continue to go for well over book price. It seems that the common theme is that no $5 and $10 have been printed since 2008 which has increased the demand for them.

Last night at the self service checkout I got 3 uncirculated consecutive $5 notes in my change. They were from 2007 so it would seem that they are still releasing notes stockpiled in 2007.

My hope is that in the next year or so, when they print more $5 and $10 notes, the prices of HB08 and DF08 will come down a bit. I think I will hold off buying them until then.

The average prices over the past couple of months for the BA08 (about $40) and HB 08 (about $63) have held very solid, with the signs still of an upward trend, so I think I'm with you MobofRoos.

Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my notes could be worth roughly. I have 2 $5 last prefix HB08 consecutive banknotes uncirculated with serial numbers HB08888229 and HB08888230

Kind regards cash555

Hi Cash555,

Firstly, welcome to CCF

Over 2012 on ebay HB08s have averaged around $57 for single notes and pretty much double that for pairs. However, prices have softened a bit since the middle of September - single notes generally going between $38 - $46 (all values quoted above include postage). Pairs have held up a little better at around $100 although there have been some that sold in the $60 - $70 range.

Goatieman.. Every time the subject of banknotes comes up. ?.. You are there. I have not been a collector of notes except for occasional radars but you are sparking my interest.
Without imposing and getting too complicated, is there (say) a top ten of notes worth looking for purely because of their low print run?
Every time I see a post there seem to be more and more prefix/year combinations so a simple top ten would be relatively easy to watch for.

Thanks for the help Pedro, that is very good to know.
That is still not too bad of a price, if prices rise again I will probly sell them as I do prefer coins.
