Hi guys

Here is something we could argue for years about.
Where does die rotation start on a coin, everyone has a different idea.
Look at this (e.g.) 1950 nickel..There are 3 pictures...Where do you think it should start from, A - B or C...?

This is a question that has come up many times at numicanada. So some of numicanada's expert decided to chart the starting point of all portraits. Have a look.

Fantastic link numidan.

I will definitely use this one for my personal analysis of die rotation.

There is one problem with their die rotation starting point when it comes to toonies...If you look, they (to me) are off centre.

Take a look at the picture below and look at the yellow line I placed...Don't you think that that is where die rotation should start...?

This is what I think a toonie die rotation start point should look like.

In the case of your George VI 5-cent coins, it is the middle one, splitting the DEI of the legend. Note that the collar die for the 12-sided effect would have been level for the top and bottom of the coin.

Hey SPP, as far as I can see, there is no standardized die rotation chart for this web site.

Maybe some one should create one for every one to use.
Would be a good idea...?

Hans Zoell published one a long time ago.... but he did not use the "clock" terminology. But, I think he did get the proper orientations of the various effigies sorted out.

I suppose you have to find a book to see what his standardization is,...correct..?

I mean if you can find one.

It would be nice for the people on this site to use as a (standard) tool.

Hello

This arrangement (2$ 1996/2003) does not have the correct center line and it will be replaced.

WERT thank you for mentioning.

I use the number of degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise (starting at the 12 O'clock position on the obverse side, for the die rotation...
Then again, I'm old school and with the digital age believe many younger people don't know the difference between clockwise & counter-clockwise...

That is so true Broken-Coin...I still adhere to old school, BUT embrace new digital technologies as most on this site will attest to.

Just that I noticed that a lot of people post their coins on here with die rotation anticipation....Some are disappointed that their rotation is not as they thought, and that may be because there die rotation starting point is not standardized.

That is why I am calling for an already or new process for all to share.

Hopfully castor won't mind us using their die rotation charts

P.S. - No problem castor

Castor...Your AVERS #2 / 1902-1910 is -2.2 degrees off centre.

And AVERS # 1 /1858-1901 is + 5.5 degrees off centre.

Good evening WERT

As coordinator of this project, I look at all that people give as error information in the presentation of this book.

Following your first message, I rechecked all the fixtures and clocks actually the obverse # 1 and # 2 was not correct. These images are now fixed and will be changed soon.

THANKS again WERT.
