Hello everyone, I have an attractive 1865 2 cent piece that has some green substance on it. Anyone know of a way to get it off the coin without much damage? Thank you.

Can you post a picture of it? It is impossible to tell you what to do with it without knowing what may be on the coin.

An acetone bath surely won't hurt the coin, and should not change the color, if the green stuff is oily then it is probably PVC, if it is hard and crusty it is most likely corrosion that won't come off and has most likely etched into the surface of the coin. Verdi-Care can be helpful in these cases, possibly removing most of the surface contaminants, but once any corrosion has set in it is almost impossible to remove without damaging the surface as well.
