Hello,
I picked up these two pieces recently. Alot of research turned up nothing for me. Does anyone have any info on them they would like to share? Are they actual trial strikes? Which coin or medal are they of etc? Many thanks in advance...Here are a couple pics..Best, Anthony

Hello and welcome.

They certainly look like lead die pulls, or "trial strikes", but they're not of any British or Commonwealth coin I'm familiar with. I doubt the portrait is official, or intended for use on coinage - it's a curious mixture of design elements from the Gillick and Machin portraits.

I'd assume it was for a medal of some kind, presumably 1960s-1970s. I'll check my British medal catalogue to see if there's a match there, but it's entirely possible the medal it was intended for was never struck.

OK, the initials helped find it. It's from the dies used to make these unofficial pattern 4 shillings by David R Golder.

Awesome, thanks!.....So these were 1953 issue? As I looked and found some that say 1953 issue, and others were struck in 2001 as a 1953 retro set. Same coins?

I don't know. Being unofficial coins, I suppose there's nothing to stop whoever made them from making as many as they pleased.
I think it would also be impossible to determine a date of issue of your lead pulls, either - they could have been made anytime after 1953.

Donald R Golder is still alive and well designing medals...

As for date those unofficial four shillings were made around the late 1990's.

dunno - they don't turn up all that often - had they been official Royal Mint then there would be!

There were some lead pulls from Donald R Golder's "what if" Euro sets recently on ebay - sold about £15 or so.
