I'm trying to learn the differences between all the design varieties for my Jefferson nickels dated 1938-1940..I've read and seen the Wexler pages describing the difference.."Wavy" somewhat, and, a bit indistinct for the so-called "Reverse of 38"...sharper and more defined for the so-called "Reverse of 40"...I'm curious if I am correct calling my 1938-D a "Reverse of 40"? This beautiful toned coin came in a complete 1938-2003 Album, and, is one of my favorite Jefferson nickels I own, with the probable Wayte-Raymond rainbow album toning obverse. I see the 1939-D with Reverse of 40 in better grades has quite a nice premium...with the toning, it would really add a bit, I would think...NOT for sale though!(The album was the best find of the year, a seller's personal album since childhood, and, loaded with awesome high-grade coins, many BU, GEM BU, and, plenty of Full Steps, and proofs from 1962-2003...since winning last month, I have bought the 1953-1961 proofs, 2000-2011 PCGS PF69 DCAMS(at about 3-5 dollars each!), and, will decide which album to put these in, probably the new dansco coming out, and, the older traditional dansco, for full-set with proofs from 1962 on I believe...I also bought ALL SATIN FINISH nickels(from uncirculated mint sets, 2005-2010)...a few more proofs, and the 1994 & 1997 SMS coins, and, it will be a sweet collection. Lot's of upgrading(FS's, 1970's, 80's) to do though...
Thanks
Cal

It's a reverse of 1940

1939 P Type 1 Rev of 1938 10% 1 in 400 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unknown.
1939 P Type 2 Rev of 1940 90% scarce but much more available than TY 1 having 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.

1939 D Type 1 Rev of 1938 25% 1 in 150 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unverified.
1939 D Type 2 Rev of 1940 75% 1 in 10 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.

1939 S Type 1 Rev of 1938 55% 1 in 100 having 5 full steps. 6 steps unverified.
1939 S Type 2 Rev of 1940 45% 1 in 10 5 full steps. 6 full steps very rare.

So generally all business strike 1939 Jefferson nickels are found more often with the 1940 reverse.

Notice the definition of the cuts at the ends of the steps which are very undefined on reverse of 1939. I thought I saw some wavy steps there but I would go with the ends of the steps on this one to be sure. numismo had posted at one time how the serifs on the lettering are more elaborate on 1940 reverses. ( like yours ).

By the way, beautiful key date, I think from the images it may be AU55 and it's a purty one.

Thanks NickelGuy..awesome info....yes, I have seen Numismo's post, and pics, will review.....going to search your posts for more info on anything and everything to do with nickels...funny how the nickel bug hit me, out of nowehere, after collecting mostly counterfeit British Halfpennies for over a year...to get a "Purty" review from you is worth it's weigh, in, gold, or, lots of NICKEL! It's fun for me to Slow down, and make a real collection for a change(rather than hunt for varieties/errors, sell them all)...I suffer from HDTV, or, whatever the hyper-lack-of attention deficit thing is called, and, found "normal" coin collecting a challenge, as I tended to not really enjoy it, probably due to the time and effort involved in really learning a denomination...getting older has helped slow me down, and, I'm working on specifics, like what year/mint has the best/worst strikes, and, details like that...so, I've advanced to about the collecting level of a 17 year-old now!
