If there is one million ounces of gold to be dug up, something like six to ten million cubic yards of material will have to be removed from beneath the jungle cover.

Haiti hasn't the capital develop the ore body, so foreign money and ownership will have to do that.

Will the primary refining (cyanide) process be located next to the mine?

I hope it is not too close to large numbers of people living close by.

Will the existing Haitian environmental protection Laws be able to protect the environment, where corruption is so prevalent?

@sel_69l - Yep, this is looking like it's starting out with problems on the horizon. Hati is still in shambles from the quake, and where such a large wealth of minerals looks like a solution, I very much doubt that the country is going to benefit from it.

You'd think it'd be an opportunity to bring some economic development to the country, but with Haiti's luck, it's bound to bring misery. I'm sure somebody's going to exploit the locals, poison the water and denude the jungle. Deforestation (leading to hurricane-season mudslides) is one of Haiti's biggest challenges, and a big strip-mining operation is not going to improve the situation.

Try working in a mining industry. Someone will have to pay the price and the capital cost is insanely high because of remote area / wages / hazards / legistation requirements etc.

I'm not satisifed with this site. It doesn't mention how many grams of mineral / ton.
