1889 Morgan, found at my local coin store. Still in the flip and difficult to photograph, but I grabbed these shots in a hurry last night. I saw no evidence of cleaning, and just a bit of toning around the rim of the obverse.
She's got a LOT of original luster - these photos don't really do her justice, but will have to suffice until I have more time to do it right. In hand, to my barely trained eye she appears to be MS-63 or better. The biggest thing that jumps out at me is the lack of detail in the breast feathers on the reverse - perhaps a tired old die ?
What say you, CCF ?

The hair above the ear and the breast feathers are the highest point on the Morgan dollar and are often weakly struck in this area. Sharply defined breast feathers and hair above the ear normally command higher grades and premiums on occasion. This dollar is relatively common and sounds like you got a good price on it! I'd give it at least MS62, the cheek appears to be clean (free of marks). Well done, IMO.

Quote: You're kidding, right? No, I'm not. I think $30 was a more than fair price. My asssessment of the grade may be off, but the deal was a good one for me. Am working to 3AM so I cannot post more photos right now, but will try to get some better ones up by tomorrow that should better illustrate the luster of this Morgan.

Good snag for $30. Can't tell usually if there's a faintest trace of grayness from photographs that represents slight wear or evidence of an old cleaning. Might be a slider BU (58) or a strict MS62 coin, it has too many marks for 63. Might have been dipped at one time, accounting for the many hairlines. Still, it is a great buy for $30.

To me, it looks like it is around a AU-53/55. It does have a cleaned look to it but that may be a result of lighting. Still not a bad buy for $30!

Thanks for the thoughtful replies, folks. In the hand, this one does not appear to have been dipped or cleaned. I also had one of the guys in the store that I trust give me his opinion, as well - not cleaned, just a nice coin.
I think once I get her on a black background with some Jansco lamps on her she'll look a lot better.

$30 isn't over priced, but it would be about the limit.
