My older catalogues have always listed 4 as the accepted pop. Now they list as 5, is the fifth one the example that was in Canadian Coin News that Greg Ingram spent so much time trying to authenticate, and did the coin collecting community accept it or did it get certified. Maybe Hobin was right.

I always thought that there were 3 - at one time all owned by Pittman. I could be wrong though.

THREE FOR SURE AS THEY WERE ALL ON DISPLAY AT THE ANA IN the late 1980's (Pittsburgh). Mysterious coins indeed the three on display were all specimens. Mosy reseachers and numismatic experts believe there are NO circulation strikes.

I always thought it was three in the private marketplace plus a single example in the Bank of Canada currency museum (four total). I think there are 5 known dot 10c specimen strikes known.

"Back-door job" is commonly applied to unauthorized coins struck by mint employees fooling around on the presses, and then smuggling out the result.
From what I've read, Mr. Pittman acquired his samples from the widow of Mr. Roberts, who was the Master of the Mint at the time.
Is it a "back-door job" if the Master of the Mint authorizes the strike, and then takes the results home himself?
Opinions?

In the early 50's John J. Pittman bought two 1936 specimen sets, one from Mr. Roberts family, and one from Maurice Lafortune. Both sets contained 1cent,10cent and 25cent dots.In the early 60's he bought the MS 36 dot cent at an auction, previous owner was M.Lafortune.Both Roberts and Lafortune were Mint employees. Draw your own conclusion I don't believe any others have been authenticated, nor does one exist in the National Currency Collection, but I may not be up to date.

They do tend to change in numbers, as well as in states-of-preservation... >>> 1957 Charlton, 5th Edition... Page 3 ... "The quarter is fairly readily found, but despite a larger issue, only Two Cents and two dimes have been reported as found in circulation" Page 33 ... MINT REPORTS top of page and under the SMALL CENTS heading: 1936 Dot (*) 678,823. Next column under the SMALL CENTS (continued) heading: (*) Only 8 known. Page 34 ... under the 10 CENTS SILVER Dominion of Canada (Continued) heading: 1936 Dot (*) 192,194. Bottom of same column, same page: (*) Only 6 known. >>> 1958 Charlton, 6th Edition... Same info on page 3. Same info on the 1¢ (*) Only 8 known But, the info on the 10¢ becomes (*) Only 8 known. dts...

I should add the following information from the 1957 Charlton, as I believe it applies to the state-of-preservation aspect of things...
Also on Page 3...
"The sale of an uncirculated cent at $900 was recently recorded"
dts...

I've often wondered how many fellow hobbyists have actually taken the time to study "dots" (beads, periods, colons) that we accept without question, as being-of-legitimate-design...
Hope the coin works-out for you Zonad...
