They are just trying to make a buck ..just like the guys selling rolls for almost double face. If people buy it ... can you really blame the seller? Opportunity knocks but once so you gotta get what you can from those who have more money than sense. You gotta flip it fast before people get educated.

You betcha. The one's lying about errors are scum. The one's selling rolls for double face are not.

You say "just like the guys selling rolls for almost double face", there's not one iota of similarity between the two.

Can I blame the seller? Of course I can. This is far different than selling rolls for 2x face - this is deception. Fraud. Taking advantage of the ignorance of the buyer.

Huge difference in the two, one is a liar committing fraud (IMO) and the other is a capitalist.

I think it was a HUGE mistake putting the writing on the edges. Opens up a whole can of worms.

I think the edge-lettering was yet another way for the Mint to try to get people interested in their new program. Sorry, but I cannot bring myself to support this endeavor at all. It's all personal preference.

Let's keep in mind the incredible number of "errors" that have surfaced with the State Quarters. I think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg where the Presidential dollars are concerned...

I have to put my agreement with Bobby and Dave ,, There is a huge difference between selling rolls for what they will bring, and playing on the ignorance of the new and unknowledgeable collectors by making bogus claims about the coins.

Integrity is everything !!

When they start coming out with auctions and they will, stating that they have two varieties of the dollar coin, I would be ok with that.

But to claim it is an error when it is CLEARLY not, is a lie.

Has anyone bothered to email the seller to enlighten him? He may not be a collector. He may not read Coin World or NN. He may not read forums like this. He may not know that the edge lettering orientation is random. He may think that he has something special. If he doesn't know he is lying then he isn't lying...is he?

If he knows and lies on purpose shame on him and shame on the uniformed folks who buy anything and everything that any tom dick harry list. Caveat Emptor.

I emailed every single one of them that was running yesterday morning. Not one of them has posted a clarification or withdrawn an auction.

You can't ask anyone to do more than that.

People take advantage of people daily in this hobby. I've been on the short end more than I will admit so I have little sympathy for the husksters out there. Unscrupulous dealers are wide spread. It only goes to figure that they would do it openly on ebay. That's the only thing I don't like about this hobby. It's all a opinionated con but the only way to combat it is with knowledge and a resolve to not be taken advantage of again. Until you get that resolve ...you are easy pickins and ebay is like shooting fish in a barrel for some.

Is overgrading when selling and undergrading when buying ..a form of lying?

Where is the integrity in that?

Andrew in my opinion they are not different ,, overgrading or undergrading with the intent to decieve is no better.

however there are honest grading differences since it is a subjective aspect of the coin.

However knowledge and self confidence can over come both of these senarios.

The mint website talks about different positioning of the edge lettering but there are lots of coins on ebay that exhibit the edge lettering that is upside down. I also noticed ebay 230093055064 doesn't have any edge lettering at all! I'm getting popcorn, this will be fun to watch.

The planchets are then fed into a press that applies over 80 metric tons of pressure, firing like a car engine to turn out as many as 750 coins a minute. The freshly minted dollars are carted to another machine where the edge lettering is pressed into them (right side up or upside down, at random) before being weighed, counted and poured into large Kevlar bags ready for shipping.

I emailed the seller myself and what he said would make you sick lol I deleted it so I don't have it to show you all but he said he knew they are not errors but wanted his share of the bootie! he also said that the guy with the PC that had not lettering on the edge was a fake and that the guy polished it. I had already figured that out so that meant nothing. but I'm with you on this one Mark they are all scum
