Currently working on a type set and was wondering which Classic Commemorative Halves you would recommend for the four slots. I'm thinking that an Oregon Trail and the Pilgrim Tercentenary are likely going to be part of the set but nothing is set in stone as of yet.
Any advice for someone who knows little about Classic Commems? I'm thinking MS64 or lower examples to keep my budget intact.

I've always loved the Texas.

The Oregon and Pilgrim are nice choices -- beautiful and filled with history.
Is there a commem from your home state? If 'Yes' it might be nice to include it in your set.
The Civil War was certainly a pivotal event in US history, including either an Antietam or Gettysburg in your set would certainly add an immense amount of historical context.
I also like 1915 Pan-Pac for its beautiful, classic design.
The Texas is another commem with a beautiful design that nearly always gets a positive reaction from those that have a look at it.
Hope that helps!
Good Luck!

I've waffled back and forth from four Early Commems to two each each early and modern. Currently I have two each. Pick ones (either vintage) that have meaning to you. A Type Set (IMO) is an extension of the collector. As an aside, the Oregon Trail is viewed by many as the most beautiful of them all. Texas also is a very nice one as is Norfolk. Bottom line - make your choices "YOU".

I have 2 classic (stone Mtn, and Bridgeport) and 2 moderns (George Washington and 2008 bald eagle)
Stone mountain I bought with my dad because we have a painting with the same scene at his house. Bridgeport I bought him as a gift because he loved the modernized eagle. Got it for him as a heart surgery cheer up gift. George Washington as its the first modern and we live 10 minutes from mount Vernon. 2008 is my oldest daughters birth year and the baby eagles remind me of my kids.
I agree completely with paleoguy45. There are so many options, pick the ones which have meaning to YOU or that you love.
Let us know what you decide.
Dad and I are building our type set together and I don't think there will b any change in the commem halves.

Antietam Gettysburg and Stone Mountain are three of my favorites. I would definitely say pick at least 1 civil war one if for nothing else the history it brings.
As mentioned Oregon and Texas are beautiful coins as well, so is the Pilgram. Lexington-Concorde is another that has a great amount of history that I really enjoy.

I have the Columbian and Stone Mountain, simply because they were affordable.
Then I scored an autographed Bay Bridge for under $90, and of course, now I can't break it out of its holder.
Then I went with the Oregon Trail, but it's my only slabbed coin and I'm finding it hard to break it out. I guess it's now my "Slabbed Type."
So I still have 2 holes to fill and have the Pilgrim, preferably a 1921 on my radar screen, as well as possibly another Bay Bridge or California Jubilee. I love the reverse of the Pilgrim and spent nearly 20 enjoyable years in California, so the personal angle comes into play.
I certainly can't argue with the 1915 Pan-Pac, but that's way out of my price range.
No need to decide all 4 now though. Good luck.

Thanks for all the great advice! Already picked up the Pilgrim Tercentenary a few days ago. Perhaps I'm not going to be able to limit myself to four .... and might have to get a few additional examples and stray a little from the traditional type set! Here is my MS64 Pilgrim

Lovely Pilgrim and a great choice for your set. The 50-coin US silver classic silver commemorative set is filled with tremendous historical coins ... many great ones to choose from. Looking forward to whatever you decide ... send along some more photos. David

I went with a combination of affordable and historical. I wanted coins that represented major events in history:
Discovery of the New World - Columbus Exposition Settlement - Pilgrim Independence - Lexington Westward Expansion - Oregon Trail
I would agree that the Civil War was probably a big event missing, but really wanted to put an Oregon Trail as it is such a beautiful design.

Ken I like your choices and the reasoning behind it. Could always start a civil war set just for the fun of it lol

When I started reading this post it sounded like me several years ago, I was trying to pick 4 and ended up with 6 or 7, Now I have 20 or so and I always keep an eye out.
