I read in my june CoinWorld magazine that the SF Mint is producing a "collector" version circulation strike America the Beautiful Quarter....while excited this is happening, I am at a bit of a loss as to why this developed in the 2nd year of production...if I am correct, a complete 2012 ATB set, made later in 2012, would include: 2012-P 2012-D 2012-S 2012-S Proof This 4-coin series didn't occur with the State Quarter Program, nor the U.S. Territories Program, and, leaves me puzzled why the mint added a 4th coin in the early cycle of a long production, and, didn't start with year 1, 2011...very odd, IMHO. Kinda makes a weird set, one year classic P-D-S, next year P-D-S_S. CG Your opinion welcomed.

There are a number of other topics already posted about this offering, but I think you'll find everyone is a bit confused/torn as well. I think the things I've heard are as follows:
1. Will mess up Dansco/Whitman/Intercept Shield or whatever your album/folder of choice is. 2. Could be in line with the 75th anniversary of the SF Mint 3. Possibly making up for lost seigniorage due to all the cents and nickels being produced this year as well as lack of production of quarters. And they'll make more revenue by selling more stuff to collectors.
Personally I like it. But still trying to figure out why. You also forgot to include the Silver Proof issue, which makes a total of 3 coins with a S MM and 5 for the set (depending on your definition of "set" of course).

Ah..yes, forgot the Silver...and, yes, will mess up an album bigtime...I like "order" and predictability...will have to buy a blank page and fill in...

The mint's explaination was that collectors seem to like business strike 's' mint coins. Summarized, they basically said they were making the coin because they can. The tone was that it was purely a grab at more revenue.
I have a feeling we are going to be seeing more and more of this revenue grabbing.
You will have PDSS for all of this series so far, except the one of five this year... PDSSS, this will screw up our albums, and Dansco can't really read their minds to determine when the next last minute addition to the set will be.

I just might collect the set and not buy the Dansco until it is in the history books. That way I'll get the correct holes...

A full quarter set for 2012 actually includes seven coins of each design. P & D in circulation and uncirculated strikes (4), plus S in circulation, proof, and silver proof strikes (3). So it is PPDDSSS.

The Silver Eagle blank page was first, followed by the Quarter blank page, with sales over 22 million each...

I personally would sacrifice my neighbor's Camaro for an O MM 2kxx quarter.
While we're dreaming, let's get the CC mint back in action too. :)

Quote: A full quarter set for 2012 actually includes seven coins of each design. P & D in circulation and uncirculated strikes (4), So even though the "Satin Finish" coins are gone, there are some folks still considering the Uncirculated Set coins " not" to be "circulation" business strikes ? ...... I'm not going to separate or recognize any difference between them. (whether in my albums, or otherwise.) To me, they will just be better examples of biz. strikes in the Sets, but both will be "circulation" business strike coins. It is a trip BACK to the old days, when these coins were put into albums right from the Sets, as their BU circulation grade coins. I don't believe most collectors could tell the difference between those and good BU circulation quality business strikes. This will be the same.......and continue for me. GOOD RIDDANCE TO THE SATINS ! .......

Hey--EASY on those SATINS Eagle...I just put together the entire set(so I CAN keep them in their own albums)...I know they seemed to be love or hate, with not much middle ground...I'm on the like side...to each their own.... I think us CCF folks should knock heads, seriously, and think about having a company, whatever one wants to help, design albums for us, and other collectors who want options for as many slots as possible in a denomination, and year...could be a subscription method...I, like most of us, prefer viewing both sides of a coin, when in an album. I don't see why a consumer-friendly album-maker would not want to pickup some extra business working with us...and, IT HAS TO BE MADE IN AMERICA.... Thoughts welcomed.

.......... NICE IDEA ! ..... I would like the difference recognized between the Satins and the business strikes in albums ! They would certainly get MY business ! ....... ... ... But I do NOT want the difference recognized between Uncirculated Mint Set coins and " BU circulation business strike" coins, post-Satin era. The separation is/was noted with the Satins..... but they're gone now.....so it needs to go back to the pre-Satin days and stay that way...... as it is now since they've done away with the Satins. And yeah, I definitely agree, the problem will grow more complex with the U.S. Mint adding "S" mint issues to the ATB Quarters ! .... Surely, at least this change will be observed by Dansco and the like at some point ? An "S mint" circulation business strike ? They will HAVE to note THIS change in the albums surely ! ... If not..... boy will this muddy up the waters for album collectors !! ..... ..... Someone should try to call a "higher-up" at Dansco Headquarters and ask some questions ! Anybody willing to try ?
