Good news! Rasiel Suarez, a well known ancient numismatist, has made his excellent book on Roman Imperial Coins available as a FREE download! Here is a link:

I had mentioned this a while back. ERIC II is also available for download at a fee though, but a lot less than the cost of the book.

I wouldn't print it. Too much to print. I plan to consult it on my computer as needed.

JW thanks for the link!
I am having difficulty downloading the link. Every time I try the computer prompts me to buy "WinZip" for $29.99.

Sorry to bother with my IT troubles but is there a way to not spend $29.99 and still download ERIC. I would just as soon put the $29.99 towards coins:)

The download for ERIC I is free. Why do you really need Eric II? I would suggest downloading ERIC I and seeing if you really feel the need to upgrade.

There have been a lot more coins added to ERIC II. The only downside about downloading ERIC II is that it does not have the RIC numbers where the book does. aorta is the same as the downloaded version of ERIC II, but the print is much smaller and the images aren't in color. I have the books and the downloads and perfer ERIC I as the download and ERIC II as the book.

Can someone explain to me what value there is in a version of ERIC II without the RIC references? What are you gaining from the information? Are you cataloging your coins by their ERIC numbers?

You would think if the book has all the numbers than the downloaded version and aorta should also have them. I was disappointed when I got my copy of aorta, but it's a handy small reference to carry to shows, but without the RIC numbers it's only value is the pictures. I wouldn't want to carry the larger ERIC II to shows it's just too big and heavy. To answer your question Doug. The book is excellent, but aorta and the downloads really fall short without the RIC numbers.

For those of us that can't afford RIC. The book ERIC II and the free download of ERIC I is the way to go.

I download it few months ago. Anyway thanks for the link.
PS Thing I hate about ERIC is that all coin pics are at the end of the book. Its even more annoying when book is, like in this case, in pdf.

Regardless of the absence of RIC numbers, the free ERIC II download is a wealth of information. I know Wildwinds is a great place to see obversers and reverses as well with RIC numbers, but the historical infomation on the various emperors is a draw for me in the ERIC II download. I have plenty of space on my harddrive to put that and other good references too.
So thanks JW for the content and I'll have to check out the ERIC I download as well. Where do you find that?
BTW I had no problem downloading it. Took less than a minute.

It has come to my attention that CoinProject is in the early stages of adding short biographcal bits to their pages but it will take a long time before all is completed by the volunteer labor. I'm supposed to be reviewing the Septimius Severus denarii and always seem to put it off in favor of something else. As it is now there are just a lot of identified coins and you need to study a bit to be able to find what you want (hint: sort by reverse legend). It is hard to ind one coin in a database of 100000 but there is a lot of good, free info here.

One with the start of a bio is
http://www.coinproject.com/search_e...&sort=legend
There is not much there but there is not much to say about her. I'll be interested to see the bio of a big name ruler whenever that happens.

In all honesty, I feel guilty typing here when I should be working on my Coin Project commitment.
