some time ago there was a thread about storage,
As I recall, SAP contributed that he used storage boxes (rather than albums) made for storing photographic slides.
The standard photo-slide is 50mm x 50mm, which matches our beloved 2x2.
I have been using hard cases with slots, intended for slides, and I'm fairly happy to have some of my collection that way.
But, an album has a big advantage. After readin SAP's post, I could see that a box might be even better than an album.
SAP was kind enough to provide a link to his supplier.
I e-mailed them ... but the ignorant so-and-sos never replied.
Anyway, I have stumbled over something similar (maybe the same) on the 'bay.

So SAP, could you please look at these items, and I would welcome any comment or comparison that you might make:

Item number: 170839639011 FILE BOX Slide Mount
and
Item number: 170839646693 SLIDE MOUNT CLEAR SHEET 5x5cm

And everyone else, feel free to put your tuppence-worth in too.

One of the great frustrations of collecting is that money spent on storing, protecting, and displaying one's coins, is money that I'd rather spend on more coins.

I had used slide boxes when my collection was much smaller, but I don't now.

With 2x2's stored in a slide box, each coin has to be withdrawn even if you are just scanning over them. Photographically slide boxes are hard to find these days, because colour slides are no longer used.

With a clear plastic page album, 20 coins can be scanned by the eye at a time. The problem with clear palstic pages is that they should only be used for short term storage, unless archival plastic pages are used.

Copper or bronze coins, stored in Mylar 2x2's, can still darken, if clear PVC plastic pages are used. Red Unc. bronze coins look much nicer than black or dark brown Unc. bronze coins.

I store all my duplicate in either plastic tubes or in 2x2 cardboard flips. The ones in the 2x2's are all in those cardboard Red Whitman two row boxes. Many have been there for well over 20+ years with absolutely no problems at all.

thankyou: I've only seen the boxes on ebay; Australian shops don't push them.

Sel: I use the slide boxes - not the magazines that go into the projector, but boxes intended for storage.
I get the metal ones with a good closure.
I use them for gold coins -
so I'm not in dread of it busting open; and I can stack a few other boxes on top.

I agree that there are two issues: storage; and display.
And for display, good quality 2x2, in a good quality album, is the best.

What I have been considering recently is moving away from 20-pocket pages, to the small 60- or 80-pocket albums. Some parts of my collection would group nicely in that size album, rather than sharing space in a big album.

That said, the 20-pocket pages still have a place. And my initial query related to the boxes, rather than albums: the boxes seem to me to be less subject to spills, etc, and easier to stack. I was hoping to confirm that this was the sort of box that SAP had referred to previously.

Hi peter, sorry for the delay in replying - I've been away on holiday for a couple of weeks.

I had originally posted that I used PrintFile Safe-T-Binders. These "binders" are actually a combination of box and album: they are folders with rigid walls on three sides with the fourth wall hinged to allow it to open flat. The rigidity allows you to stack them on top of each other floor to ceiling (if you've a mind to do so) without putting the squeeze on the bottom layers. It's squeezing that causes most of the "2x2-in-album stickification" you sometimes encounter.

The good news is, I finally worked up an order from them for eight boxes, not long after making those posts. The bad news is, they work too well, and I now could use a couple more.

As for your specific question: yes, this item does indeed resemble the box-folder in question. At 5cm they're a shade thinner, and I can't make out from the pics how they seal up, but I'd reckon they're good enough for the purpose.

The album page looks more or less the same, too, but again, it's a brand I'm not personally familiar with. I have in the past bought some slide album pages which, though made of good quality plastic, were too thin to support the weight of coin-filled 2x2s. But being the same brand as the albums, if you buy them both together, at least you've got a good chance the pages will fit in the album properly.

My recommendation: try 'em and see.
