Does anyone know what the "2012 Presidential $1 Four-Coin Sets" that are set to go on sale on 06/26/2012 are? Is this something like the three coin sets issued for the ATB Quarters?

I would think it would be the 4 coin set that features one coin of each Presidential dollar minted for 2012. I think they did that due to this being the first year of those coins being "non-circulating" (I guess they assume there will be more collector demand). They also released a set of UNC coins that feature 1 P and 1 D for each business strike Presidential dollar minted for 2012. I guess this way people can get a single issue or they can get the P&D set (along with the proof sets...might be a little overkill.

Yup, that is what it is. Four circulating dollars from each mint (P & D) for $9.95 for each four coin set. I guess that beats buying rolls. Now if they would just sell us the circulation strikes of cents, nickels, and dimes we could build complete sets of circulation strikes. It would still be much better if they would just put them all in one set, probably a lot cheaper too.

The "premiums" charged for these 4 coin Sets makes them an "Album ender" for a lot of folks I bet, or at least the ones who used to get the rolls from their banks for face value.
A circulation set for a highly undesirable Ultra Modern coin that ISN'T procured at face value......hummmm.......sigh.

And who will want to pay EXTRA money for a Presidential Dollar(s) ? >, (esp., for a coin deemed to be such a worthless coin in numismatics). Making the P, D, and S album MORE difficult and costly to put together and complete.....

I'm glad I'm just sticking with my Proofs and callin' it GOOD ! ....

They've been doing that since the late 1940s. It is called the US Mint Uncirculated coin set.

Yes but unfortunately since 2005 the uncirculated sets no longer contain circulation strike coins that haven't been circulated. They contain the oddball coin that is struck at higher forces and with special die sets that since last year are struck on standard circulation planchets (no longer on burnished ones). I would love to see an end to the current uncirculated set and have it go back to being a set of circulation strike coins, pulled from the production bins.

They don't make burnished coins for the UNC sets now. They stopped in 2010, so in 2011 and on they are back to the usual circulation coins.

And since they have a huge mark up over face value, I would expect them to be better than regular circulation strikes.

The coins in the current uncirculated sets are not circulation strike coins. The only thing they stopped doing in 2010 was use of the burnished blanks. They still use specially prepared die and strike at higher forces and lower speeds than circulation strikes. All the burnishing of the blanks does is reduce surface defects on the planchet, it does not affect the look of the finished coin, which is controlled by the die.

I should also point out that the coins in these sets are circulation strikes, the same as the coins that go into rolls and bags. The uncirculated strike equivalent is the 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set which contains all eight coins (both Denver and Philadelphia in one set). I think the mint split the circulation strike coins into two sets to avoid confusion with the uncirculated set.

Ditto. And I still haven't picked up this years. When they quit circulating these, I quit collecting them.
I wonder if the mint didn't intend to go NIFC with these from the beginning. Ya know, get the collectors going then pull the rug out from underneath and watch what happens.

Yeah, prolly Ken they did. Or at least they knew they could fall back on that option if things didnt go as they might have hoped.
Just keep in mind, all you have 2 do is use the Pres. Dollars that come in the full Uncirculated Mint yearly sets to keep going on your other albums/folders.

The Proof collection is the one which will be mine, the others r 4 the daughter, nephew, etc. So, like you, I was doing some "others" too, with the BU rolls from the banks....but this can STILL continue......

So you DONT have 2 stop collecting the non-proofs actually !

What are any of us going to do with the Presidential dollars that come from the Uncirc. Sets anyway ? ...... throw them away ? ..... spend em' ? ....... naw..... of course not ! We'll use them to continue the collections already started.
(Though my extra sets were all date sets or "D" mints, so I'll still have a lot extra with the unused "P's".)

Ummm, I was filling my album with coins from the Mint Sets already. Best chance for the highest quality coins.
