I picked up the best looking gold I have come across in awhile...at least at a good price. I wanted to get some opinions what everyone thought of for a grade. Like a lot of folks, I am thinking of sending it off to pcgs.

In person it doesn't appear to be cleaned at all, but there are some marks in the photo that show up that kinda look like it. I don't know.

Anyways, it's an 1853 2 1/2 dollar gold, I wish it was a "D" but regardless, it's a sharp looking coin!

Any thoughts?

Mike

There are horizontal hairline scratches that provide evidence of a past cleaning. Well see what others say though
especially visible above the eagle and on Liberty's face

UNC details, lightly cleaned - probably rubbed with a slightly abrasive cloth

Curious double beading on both sides of the coin.
What is the explanation for this?

I agree with Fenton, It's most likely UNC, maybe AU55 ish, but details none the less. Clear signs of wiping.

Sel, Double beading? Not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate please?

Before I read anyone elses thoughts it looked to me like a light cleaning, the hairlines below and above the eagle seem like pretty good indicators of a light wiping.

By double beading he means, I believe, the rim detail (look at the bottom half rim on the reverse and obverse

I agree with the others; I doubt it will grade. Choice AU otherwise.

I just can't understand why someone would clean a coin with such good detail. This seems to be so common with gold too. I really don't get it.

Now I do have to say, I got this at spot price as of yesterday. $185.

I see what you mean about the "double beading" where the tick marks going around the coin appear in a double row under the date. I will have to look at that closer.

If you got it for spot you did good, whether cleaned or not.

I think you got a pretty good deal. Even if it is slightly cleaned (I think it is), the CV on it is around the $300 - $350 mark.

I will go with AU-58 with a wipe. Can't go wrong at just spot!
