I came across a silver 2008 presidential coin of James Monroe. I've done some research and it seems like there may have been a planchet error at the mint. Any ideas whether or not this is the real deal?

More likely to be plated. What does the edge look like?

Does the edge look sharp and scratchy? Or has it been smoothed over as if electroplated?

If you have a gram scale, the weight will help a lot, as if it's within tolerance it's probably just plated.

You may be talking about the thousands of monroe dollars reported to be struck on quarter planchets. This particular coin was not struck on one of these planchets (it would be smaller if it had). More than likely, as CaptainF said, it was plated.

Hi,

I think I got a similar silver golden dollar coin from a Valley Metro ticket vending machine last night. Mine is for President John Adams.

I do not have any special scale to weigh it; it is edge-etched, sized, and also looks exactly like the normal/golden John Adams $1 coin... except for the silver color to it, of course.

Does the silverness of it make it special in any sort of way?

If it is in nice condition and you like it, then it can be
special. Otherwise just a novelty. Still worth a dollar.

I just found the same thing today--a silver colored John Quincy Adams dollar, 2008P. Everything appears to be exactly the same as the "gold" version (even within weight range), but only "silver."

I'm a newbie and have been researching the Presidential dollars, but am not clear on a couple of things, so I'd appreciate any feedback.

1.) Is it true that no Presidential dollars have ever been minted in silver, even the ones included in each year's collector's set of silver minted coins?

2.) Since this isn't a quarter planchet (it's the same diameter), my first thought was it was possibly missing an outer layer, but would this be plausible? Especially since the thickness of the coin is also the same?

3.) Why would someone electroplate one of these dollars if no real silver ones exist?

4.) What is meant by the edge looking "sharp and scratchy?"

Thanks!

That is correct.

If it were missing an outer layer it would probably be a bit thinner. Also, the inner layer would be copper colored, not silver colored.

1)Yes, no silver examples exist. However, an initial proposition would have had 90% silver strikes included in the 2007 Silver Proof Set but that composition was not included in the final legislation. It had been thought of as almost a sure thing and you can even find an entry for silver Presidential dollars in the 2008 Red Book(printed in early 2007).

2)The inner core is copper and the outer layers are manganese-brass alloy cladding so there should not be anything with a silvery color.

3)Someone would electroplate them precisely because none exist, it is a unique novelty albeit one with no numismatic value. It all started with the State Quarter craze in the early 2000s, mass-marketers such as The Home Shopping Network were selling sets plated in silver, gold, and platinum.

4)Not quite sure on that one
