Hello all! Since the advent of iPhone I've put my digital cam away for quite some time. I unearthed it the other day (Sony cyber shot DSC-T77) it took excellent photos. The screen had been damaged so I ordered a replacement. Ultimately I learned I can't solder . Needless to say but I will anyway, I officially killed the camera haha. Wondering which digital camera as cheap as possible (I will continue to use my iPhone mostly) has better to excellent macro capabilities, if any? Thanks! Edited by joeturbo26 06/11/2012 09:20 am

I really like my (new to me) Canon Power Shot SD790IS. It takes real good macros and the (rechargeable) battery life is incredible. I got mine (with an extra battery) for just under a "C" note. Here are a couple of reviews; http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerSh...p/B0011ZK6OS

joeturbo26, do you have a magnifying app on your phone? You can also buy lens to use on the I phones camera. John1

Hello there John :) yes, I've rigged all types of contraptions to my iphone all kinds of apps LOL (I am an apple addict)... I've even done the drop of water on the iphone lens, which works INCREDIBLE. This is kinda why I don't want to spend much, because chances are I won't really use it too too much. Just thought I'd give one a shot, NO PUN INTENDED... LOL.. All kidding aside, I guess its always good to have a digital camera, and it would make it sometimes easier to bring the camera to different light sources versus rigging my iphone, and using my octopus arms to get everything situated right LOL

Can't fault your choice of camera - I shoot a T2i - but there's no "built-in macro" in that sense, only the inherent capabilities of whatever lens you have attached. The kit 18-55 is actually pretty good, with a minimum focusing distance better than any Canon prime in those focal lengths aside the bespoke 50mm Macro. A little beyond what the OP considers "affordable," though, I think.

Yea, it's not a "cheap" camera, that's for sure. But I think its one of the most cost efficient models out there.
I did A LOT of looking around before settling on this model. Love it so far however, I'm starting to reach it's the limits of the lens.

when you say you want a cheap camera I want to ask if coins for forums is the only thing you plan to shoot with the camera. If it is there are allot of options out there pretty cheap. The main thing to look for is how good the macro setting is, the second I would look for is a manual white balance feature (not one of those preset lighting features, but one you can take a picture of something white and use that to adjust the WB). Before I purchased my T1i I was using a 3.3 MP camera that cost me about 25 bucks 10 or more years ago and it took some pretty nice pictures to post on the web, wasn't much good for anything else but did really good for this. So if you do some research you can find some nice point and shoot cameras very cheap that will be good enough for that purpose.

Raymo I know you swear by it. I find that it looks so "microscope" lol. Kinda looking for a crisp photo vs magnification if that makes sense.

Maybe I'll give it another shot. I'll set it up stationary on my office computer and give it a whirl.

There was one guy here that had a camera that took excellent pics. I just can't remember what brand but it was around a hundred if I remember right. Youll just have to go through some of the old threads. I think my pics are fine for ebay. I posted a pic of my 1902 on Brads coin roll Lincoln thread. It's way better than most you see on ebay and that's why I can pick up cheap cents and sell em for triple.
