I picked the first one up for $36 and the second for $15. I'm not concerned about it being worth more than I paid but at least being worth what I paid. Would you have dropped $36/$15? BTW, the patina on the reverse of the second one is UNREAL in person under light. Thanks in advance for any input

Personally, I think you did well on both!! I estimate you got both for about 50% of RedBook value.

Yep, I can believe the drop in price on these two. The first one is a strong VF full LIBERTY. The second has a partial LIBERTY indicating a VG.

Nice pick-ups...why would you need two of the same date? Were you given an offer that you could not refuse?

oih82w8: I will double dip on a date if a coin has an appeal to me and I want to own it bad enough. When I saw the pics on that thing on the auction site, I knew it was gonna shimmy like a rainbow and it does it ever. The dealer told me he recently purchased an estate hoard and everything was in old whitney albums for 50 years so the patinas that formed over time were incredible. I am telling you the way that coin looks being wiggled back and forth under light is like WOW. So either the dealer is right or that is some doctored job. What does your experience tell you? legit tone?

I dunno, I have been wrong many times before (my most recent ANACS submittals will be my testament ), light can do strange things to coin surfaces.

I am halfway decent on grading...cleaned/altered/original surfaces I have a lot to learn from.

ya, the thing I notice on the obverse is the standout colors around the stars. You can really see color definition and I wonder is that cooked on there? Is that a forced chemical reaction? The reverse seems to be what I have seen on other coins I have. I will post a pic of a legit 1944 Washington quarter where the obverse must have made love to the acetate in the envelope/pvc in the plastic, I mean something because it's a wild coin.

In this case, I like the dealer's story of the 50 year whitney housing but hey, you never know what b.s. someone is serving you when they doctor.

I would give the first one a VF-25 and the second a VG-8. For the price you paid, I think you did well!

Love the 54! Youre right, it is very nice and it does remind me of my 59...

I would agree with VF and VG grades and I don't see any obvious problems. The VG might have some old cleaning signs but nothing that screams "problem". It would be better to have photos taken out of the 2X2 holders....
I think you got fair deals on both coins. Congrats!

It's difficult (for me) to obtain nice Seated quarters for under $40, like your VF specimen, and it seems like $50 is where I'm usually at. My wife has just started a collection of these so I'm starting to look around. The VG seems like a good price also although I'm just starting to dabble in this series
so my experience is limited. I've noticed a lot of very old silver coins have old cleanings which gives a colorful patina with age, this may explain what your seeing. Old cleaning are a lot more desirable than new cleanings, and I'm not even sure the coin was ever cleaned
Nice coins

Nice pick up at a fair price. I agree with the others, VF on the first one and VG on the second.
