Hi, can anyone explain the colouration on this coin? Is it anything to do with recent coins that are coloured by the mint? I had another coin in a different denomination and year that I thought was stained in error, and stupidly attempted to scrub off the colour. And to my surprise I found it was quite embedded and I ruined the coin ... sigh ... Any thoughts?

iI Enworb, definitely not verdigris, more like (in fact 100% like) colour overlay on special coins.

If its not verdigris I would go with paint or dye.
Those hyper metallic 50c only came out this year and your coin is dated 2008. There's no way its deliberately colored by the mint. I would put it down to environmental or deliberate damage.
Im off to bed. Nancy will be awake soon I'm sure. She's the error/variety queen.

I don't think it is paint as I am qualified high school art teacher (and artist, and art critic of seven years) and do not recognise this type of paint/ink/pigment.
Unless there are coin unique paints for lulling gullible coin newbies like me into thinking we have found something unusual...

PMD - probably nail polish or something similar that may leak in a handbag...

Quote: anodised ? No; only aluminium (and some other exotic metals). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AnodizingIncidently the colour of anodised parts is just a die dip, after the process. The anodising coat is clear. Anodising does not work on nickel/copper. If you are interested in cars, buy latest Street Machine magazine, which has quite a good illustrated article on anodising. The car articles and photos are a bonus. Jeff

Definitely not from the mint, looks like an ink of some kind. See how it is kinda patchy and only in the low points of the detail. I'd guess that it did cover all the detail when it happened but has rubbed off the high point since then. Basically PMD.

It looks suspiciously like the sticky green goo that's caused by being in a PVC pocket for some time. I have about a hundred NZ threepences that had it, plus some GB coins. When the coins are first removed from the PVC, the goo is as sticky as, and if it's not removed promptly, it dries out pretty hard. A soak in pure acetone ( NOT nail polish remover) should do the trick. Some of my poor little sods. (They were like this when I got them) I liberated them, but can't find them now. Story of my life lately.
