I recently exhumed my childhood coin collection and began selling some items on ebay. I ran across an 1848 1 Real coin from Chile in pretty good shape (maybe VF? I haven't photographed it yet) and was surprised to see that one had sold on ebay, it was beat up and holed and went for $130! The seller's title proclaimed the rarity of this date. Can anyone tell me if this is correct? I do not have any reference materials on South American coins.

There's a decent market for early post-Colonial Chilean pieces, generally better than what the Krause pricing reflects (esp. w/ the 1830's volcano type)... but in no way should a normal "beat up and holed" 1848 "1 Real" bring anything like $130. A little more common than your typical 1844, 45, 46 1R pieces, but nothing special.

What Krause DOES show is that the 1848 HALF real is a key date which could conceivably fetch $130 for a cull. So, is yours a "1/2 Real" or a "1 Real"? (we can probably guess the answer). They are plainly marked, and of course the size tells you...

In any case, trying a couple diff. searches, not seeing any such 1848 piece in ebay completed listings. Do you have the item #?
