Cheers

Its not a die crack. It is what is referred to as either a planchet flaw or metal peel.

Thanks enworb. Is it common or something uncommon? Would it be a keeper?

I have not seen as many on $1 coins as 20c and 2c coins. Both those denominations seem to be quite common for this error. I just finished rearranging my error/variety coins and I have quite a few. I keep them.

There are some images of $1 Peels / lamination flaws here along with other denominations:

I have some $1 Die Crack coins and one day I'll get around to posting some images, sooner than later I hope.

With the modern quality control on the metal composition as well as during the minting process these sort of errors are not as common as they were in the pre-decimals, or the 60's/70's for that matter.

The mint is always trying to improve it's process to stop any errors from making it into the wild. They know that we are always on the lookout to rescue them.

Cheers
Peter

P.S. Nice find by the way.
