Quote: wulffy11 All in all, I am a big fan of the ATB series. I am in the minority here haha, but I think it's one of the more attractive coin series that I have seen. I would agree with you. They are imho minature works of art. I do hope that the mint keeps up the artwork quality for the rest of the series life.

What? Do you mean that they are making more special quarter designs after the State Quarters ended? You NEVER see them in change. Ok, I never see them in change. Seriously, all of the ATB designs are better than the State Quarters. The Acadia design is really nice. I am looking forward to this one. I don't really care for the Vicksburg one. Just MHO.

I guess I'm in the minority as well -- I really like the look of the Hot Springs coin....

Got my 2012 proof set yesterday and I must say, Hawaii is awesome. I wasn't expecting a whole lot from the volcano and it looked kind of cheapy on a computer screen.
Haven't seen the unc yet, but proof Hawaii is an A+.

The Hawaii Volcanos in silver proof is extraordinary.

I'm actually not that impressed with the volcanoes one. I was really hoping for something that evoked the fountain-of-fire that the Hawaiian volcanoes are known for, due to the low viscosity of the lava they eject. Instead it looks like somebody dropped a snow cone. Actually, I like all the designs. Any one of them is better than almost all the State Quarters. I guess if I had to pick favorites, it would be between Denali, Acadia, Yellowstone and El Yunque.

Well.... viscosity is almost certainly an extremely difficult concept to convey through art. I wouldn't know where to begin. Although I'm not an artist so I'm only guessing here.
Just kidding. Hawai'i (and why the sudden addition of apostrophe in recent years? Has it always been that way and I've just been ignorant?) is probably one of my least favorites to date, but I'll reserve final judgement until I get it in a 3" format.

It's spelled "Hawai'i" (with apostrophe) in Hawaiian but "Hawaii" (no apostrophe) in English. The quarter spells it "Hawai'ian Volcanoes" but the state name is printed in English: Hawaii.

Actually it's "Hawai'i Volcanoes" on the quarter (not "Hawai'ian"), but I see what you're getting at. Thanks for the explanation.

barryg I was wondering what draws you to the Hot Springs coin.
I would have to agree with wuffy11 that whenever I see the Hot Springs coin in circulation all its luster seems to be gone. That could be attributed to the point that it was the first coin of the series.
I do feel that there has been a lot of mountains with cute animals. On the other hand there has been a lot of wide vista views.
Chickasaw does look very nice with the flight of birds. I just ordered the 5oz hockey puck and am looking forward to see the detail in the large size plate.
The eruption of the volcano looks great. But by a wide margin I am partial to El Yunque.
In my mind's eye they are all great. Just that some are better than others.

I thank you guys for getting hooked on these beautiful proof ATB Quarters. Using a LED magnifier I brought a Washington State silver proof ATB into focus. All of a sudden a huge Salmon jumped out and almost slapped me in the face. The depth of field on these coins is amazing. I can't wait to buy the whole set. This is what collecting is all about. These precious moments are what sets us apart from others. Happy collecting my friends!

stvsy the next time you look, bring along a landing net. BBQ smoked salmon on a cedar plank is good eating. That could have been a 20# you let get away. Hope you get another shot.
The LED light spooked it, next time sneak up on it. You know using lights at night I don't think is legal.
