Today we use the word vandal to refers to someone who destroys property or anything good and beautiful. The word comes from the barbarian tribe that may not have invented the process but certainly were good at it as they brought low the beauty of the Western Roman Empire in the mid 5th century AD. The highlight was their sack of Rome in 455.

Under their great king Gaiseric, Vandals issued coins imitating Roman issues. They can be spotted by the ragged legends and 'barbarous' style. My silver siliqua below copies Honorius from Ravenna (mintmark RVPS) with the Urbs Roma reverse (legend entirely missing). Note, especially, the lack of alignment between the O and R in Honorius on the obverse. The style is poor; the workmanship is poor; the coin rather well demonstrates what can happen when numismatics gets vandalized.

Very interesting coin.

I always thought of the Vandals as invading from the North and East and was surprised to learn about Gaiseric invading from Africa.

Thanks for the post Doug.

Very interesting piece of "vandalism". The Vandals must have left quite a legacy for that name to stick so long.

This is my only other Vandal coin. It is attributed to Huneric and is clearly marked as a 4 nummi denomination. I know nothing about it.

dougsmit,

These two coins are very cool and unusual. It seems like people are always trying to copy coins, even back then. Very nice.!
I was on your website yesterday and this morning, picked up some great tips on photographing..
Also your 12 types of coinage, going to see if I can get all 12 types out of the coins I have.
Thank you for the time you put into it, will be spending more time later today....
