I was looking for some help with this cent. When I first looked at it, I put it in the junk pile assuming it was suffering from some bad PMD. But as I look at it again I am not so sure.... Is it possible that it is an incomplete clip or some kind of double strike? I was thinking the beads on the obverse should be more distorted if this was PMD.

Also, I do not have much experience on the date types on 1891s. Could anyone confirm whether this is large or small date?

Thanks for any help!

Looks like a Large Leaves, Large Date to me. Sorry, I have no expertise in PMD :-)
Rest in Peace

Thanks Bosox. I had tried visiting your site but I am afraid I was a bit thick on the navigation and didn't find the right page. I was hoping it was the SD but the Charlton photos didn't leave me with certainty on it. Yours are much better.

Here are some better photos of the damage. Obvisouly this was done with some extreme force. The edge of the cut does not exactly match a planchet but I am still wondering if a loose planchet could have interfered with the strike?

I am quite sure it is PMD. Damage was done after the strike to separate the rim from the denticles.SDLL as bosox thought. It is weird, but only a little similarity to SPP's retarded coin.

Thanks....but sad to hear it.... Back to the junk pile I guess, though as an SD, maybe not complete junk....
