Hello:

I'm sure there are a lot of companies out there that offer services of grading and certifying coins.
Which company do you use?
Of the coins that are auctioned off from an auction house like heritage or sothebys for a lot of money, what company graded their coins?
I'm just trying to find the right one for very old coins that do not show much ware.
Any guidance is appreciated.
Thank you.

NGC and PCGS are the best for coins however others like ANACs which is pretty good I guess

PCGS is the top dog right now whose coins get the highest sale value, but can be tough on certain types of coins. NGC is right up there with them but doesn't fetch the same premium. ANACS would be third and ICG coins carry little premiums.

I personally only collect PCGS, but if you didnt want to use them use NGC. I know a lot of people will disagree and come in saying how great ANACS and ICG are at grading and how theyre better, but the market disagrees with that. PCGS and NGC definitely had their problems at first but now they are starting to distance themselves. I would bet the vast majority of heritage coins are PCGS and NGC.

Actually, there are not that many legitimate Third Party Graders out there. What there is alot of are alphabet soup names masquerading as TPGs and they are typically dealers buying plastic clamshells and slabbing their own inventory(direct conflict-of-interest). In many cases, the given grades are excessively high and the coin may have a problem(cleaning, damage, etc) that is not disclosed.

As far as the legitimate companies that you can trust, PCGS and NGC are the top 2 grading companies, followed by ANACS and ICG. In the third tier would be SEGS which is pretty good for classic coins and variety attribution but tends to be a bit enthusiastic with modern grading and may not note very minor problems. What makes these companies legitimate is that they accept submissions from the public, coins are reviewed by multiple graders, and they have recognized experts on staff.

if it is for coins you are not wanting to sell but just protect your collection then I would suggest ANACS as you will not have to join any group to submit coins. If you are wanting to get them graded for resale then PCGS coins seem to bring more money than NGC or ANACS, but NGC usually brings in more money from a sale than ANACS. These are the only three I can recommend anyone to send their coins in to to get graded

Bryan is correct. But, I still like NGC best. Good luck!

ANACS attributes more varieties than NGC or PCGS, which may be significant for a dedicated variety collector.

If you have some really possibly rare coins, just send them to me. I'll start my own TPGS for those. Of course there is no guarantee they will not get lost in the mail.
By now you must realize that PCGS is possibly the most popular TPGS. So many t imes at coin shows you may hear a dealer say "Of course that one cost more. It's in a PCGS slab". Every day PCGS gets more and more popular with collectors and dealers alike. If you visit their web site you see they have well over 35,000 members. Must be doing something right.
