Hi All,

I'm a bit new here, but I wanted to ask a question about cleaned silver coins.

If you have a roll of cleaned silver coins is that basically just bullion?

Also aside from cartwheeling is there any other method to determine if a really nice looking coin is authentic or cleaned?

For common date coins the short answer is yes, just bullion coins. Cleaning is easy to tell on the more worn coins. You will see unnatural luster and under magnification you will see fine scratches. Coins cleaned in the past can tone down again but there will be some trace that they were once cleaned. Best thing to do is get familiar with what uncleaned coins should look like, then you will be more able to know a cleaned coin when you see one.

So much depends on what you mean by a roll of Silver coins.
Those could be all Mercury dimes and possibly some rather expensive ones. OR they could be Roosevelt dimes, or even Silver Dollars. You would really have to be more specific.
A cleaned coin that is worth hundreds or thousands of dollars to many would make little difference if cleaned.
Also, you really should take the time to learn about the differences in types of coins, denominations, Mint marks, grades, mintage quantities, etc. Some Silver coins are just Silver. Others could be worth thousands of dollars. And just how do you know they are cleaned?
Try the top of the forum for Search tab and type in Cleaned coins, coin cleaning, etc.

Just so you know, cleaning coins is generally a bad thing. They loose value and usually have some surface scratches.

Hi All,

The coins are all common date and mint WL half dollars. I was thinking about buying them because the asking price was melt. They all looked to be AU or BU, but don't cartwheel. I felt pretty sure that they were cleaned, but now I'm not sure. I'll search for other posts about this topic.

Just Carl,

Thanks for the tip to search on CCF. I found this link --> https://goccf.com/t/116270. Based on the pictures, I'm confident the coins I'm interested have been cleaned. Good to know.

Thanks,
~JobIII
