I just got the last modern silver Proof that I needed for my Dansco. I was looking through them and remembering how each was picked for strike and having a full torch with minimal to no bag marks. How difficult it was to find some of the early clad years with a great strike. The thrill of the chase. Well worth it in terms of fun. Then I got a valuation for my insurance policy. $450. I checked online and....yep that is what a complete set of Rosies are going for; with all the modern proofs.
Now I didn't make the set to become rich....but it seems seriously wrong that I can sell this whole set and not buy a single 16D in VG. But forget that for a moment. Lol, do you know how many SINGLE Mercs you can't buy with the proceeds from that WHOLE SET OF ROSIES? 14!! Heck there are more than a few you can't buy in AU for that money!!
It just seems wrong that my whole Roosevelt collection is not worth as much as my MS 1926S!
Oh, well. Still wouldn't trade the memories!

Another thing that is 'wrong'... When you buy a put together set of Roosies in "unc/proof" for that $450, the set you get won't be put together with near the care and consideration that you put yours together with. You will get a book full of shiny dimes, and whatever they can throw at you that might pass for "BU". There will be no regard for strike, clarity, original surfaces, etc... You set is probably worth twice the amount of a set thrown together and slapped on ebay as "BU".

Rest assured that true numismatists recognize the value and personal joy of acquiring a hand selected set of well matched coins ...
I salute your dedicated efforts to complete the set ... and suggest that you forget the 'insurance valuation' and focus instead on the joy it brought you during you hunt.

I try to put my collections together with as much care and diligence as I can. Yes, I have a full Roosevelt collection. Yes, I sold a complete Mercury collection when times were tough last year. But the joy is completing a set with coins you LIKE. Coins that you look at and say, "yep, you're right." That's what I want with my Kennedy set, my Jefferson set, my Washington set... Have a complete Buffalo nickel set but it isn't right in my mind. Some day I will rectify the situation. But the happiness I find is when I get coins, no matter what the grade, that take me a step closer to completing a collection. Of course, there is no end point. That's the good part. You can never finish; only improve.

That's a nice (dangerous?) thing about being a collector. The hunt is never over.

They are all MS66+ and PR68+...the surfaces were also picked to be as reflective as the day they were minted.

You could also go for a comprehensive set of 2005-2010... Get both the full set of satins and a full set of business strike. Just a thought. You could also extend the set by adding all of the proofs that are not just proof only. Keep the fun going.

Congrats on completing a set! Completing a set is always much more satisfying than owning 1-2 rare coins for the same price. And that is why so many people try to complete a set, than own a few rare coins.
