Did the Mint use to roll the pre decimal Pennies & Halfpennies as they were made ?
I'm asking this question because I opened a 1964 halfpenny roll & got 10 coins with the same lump in varying stages, small barely visible to larger obvious lumps, seems a bit strange that they'd all be in one roll so I figured they may have rolled them as they were minted.
Also the first time I've seen this paticular error,I've seen & have a couple with die clash in the same spot but never the lumps.

Pre-Decimal--Roll-Question-?

I've opened a couple of dozen pre-decimal rolls and I've found that some coins in the roll are clearly struck from the same die pair while others clearly are not. So my guess is that the rolling happened from hoppers at the mint well after minting or alternatively wasn't done at all by the mint but later by banks.

By the way, nice lump :)

I used to a bit of roll hunting pre 1966, as a teenager.

When I asked for rolls, they could be either be rolled by the bank in which case the coins were being re circulated or,
I was given new coins that had been rolled by the Mint in Melbourne.

Thanks Mark,This roll was very different to any other roll I have opened in that all the coins were that same pinky tan colour, there was only one different grey coin in the whole roll.
Might have just been the way it was stored, maybe ?

Possibly Apple. I can remember a half roll of 1959M pennies I had that all had the same spotting on them from poor storage but not all were from the same dies.

Hi Sel, I just checked the paper wrap & it has a stamp with Commonwealth Bank & rolled on the 11th of January 1966 on the stamp as well but the coins are definitely all uncirculated.
