Continuing my occasional posts on comparing MS versus circulated coins in my classic silver commemorative set ... Up for viewing and comment this evening is the 1925 Stone Mountain Memorial Half Dollar. This is perhaps one of the more popular coins today from the classic silver commemorative set ... many folks at the CCF and elsewhere have this coin as a valued addition in their 7070 or other personal collecting interest. I attribute this popularity to several factors ... The Civil War theme is always of great interest ... and the historical connection between the coin and the actual Stone Mountain, Georgia granite sculpture of Generals Lee and Jackson is evocative of the Southern States struggle during that great war. The Stone Mountain half enjoyed a tremendous mintage ... net distribution after all returns is reported to be over 1.3 million coins ... an unprecedented mintage total in the 1920-1930 era classic silver commemorative series ... The relative high mintage makes this coins reasonably priced today ... and highly available in the marketplace in a broad range of grades for well worn to high MS. Gem MS well-struck examples are elusive as always in the series ... although this is one of several coins in the classic silver set that is also readily available in circulated condition. Here is my circulated Stone Mountain ... I grade FR02 ... honestly circulated with honest surfaces ... amazed at what this coin has seen. Compare to my PCGS MS66/CAC Stone Mountain ... blast white original surfaces on a well struck coin with amazing cartwheel luster. Enjoy David

Compare this one to the one in the link on your classis #2 thread. The reverse will almost always wear more than the obv.

Very entertaining comparison. That first Stone Mountain reverse is in well worn Barber Half territory! Thanks again for an enjoyable post.

I have one, about half way between these two examples, perhaps VF20. Bought it at melt value, when silver was around $15 / oz. At least I have one, and an expatriot one at that! I guess that a few of these managed to circulate for quite some time.

Very nice! It's cool to see a high-end and low-end coin side-by-side for quick and easy comparison.
It's interesting to see fairly even wear across the obverse surfaces while the reverse appears to be much more worn on the left side vs. the right. Likely a case of a greater differential in relief side-to-side on the reverse vs. the obverse.

That's a beautiful 66 Dave,
I got mine because:
1- I'm a Georgia boy 2- the design is fantastic 3- I like history and anything about the CW

The Stone Mountain is a favorite of mine. Actually it was the first coin in my collection given to me 1957. My Grandmother bought it in 1925 and held it until it passed to me. She always called it her Confederate Half. I still have it. Not a frosty gem like you have but still a prize to me. Looks like your FR-2 might have been somebody's lucky pocket piece. By far the most worn one I have ever seen.

Quote: My Grandmother bought it in 1925 IndianGold - Can we see a pic of that one? I'm curious to see how its aged. Its great you can say where its been and who has had it since it was originally bought in 25.

I got the avatar before I got the coin or pictures. Forum Mom was able to make the avatar from stock photos. It matches pretty well with the coin I have. BTW - I live about 12 miles from Stone Mountain
