I recently bought a coin album of 60 Pakistani coins at a price that is probably a bit more than the value of the coins. Still, I didn't mind, I knew what I wanted, and it was there.

When I got home, however, I noticed the chinese logo in the corner of the album, and got a little jump. I'm not racist or anything, , but it didn't make sense to me that a a seller in Pakistan would import Pakistani coins from China.

So I measured the diametres, they were all correct. I used a small cubic Neodymium Iron Boron magnet, and the ones that were supposed to be Nickel got stuck, while the others did not. The coins LOOKED like they were supposed to in pictures on the net. I don't have very precise weighing equipment, but I stacked a couple of the coins I had multiples of, weighed them, and they showed the expected weight. I weighed several different coins together, and their sum was what was expected.

I called up the seller, and he told me that the album may have been chinese (although he says he bought it locally), but the coins were all Pakistani.

So I'm going to go with the assumption that these coins are real, but when a coin is a fake, what exactly do you have to look for? You can't really go beyond weight, size, metal and appearance, can you? It is not like someone will make near perfect fakes, right?

Babar: What were some of the types of coins in the album?. Are they base metal coins or are some of them supposed to be silver with some significant value?

Obviously, you have some concern, because of their probable Chinese origin, but perhaps there is no worry. The Chinese make lots of genuine things, I guess coin albums as well, and still none of the coins in the album need to be questioned.

Perhaps you could post some pictures, and we may be able to comment on them.

They were Pakistani (and Pre-Pakistan) coins. As I said, I don't really think they're fake, and if they are, they're so close to the original that I wouldn't be able to tell. Hence my question was more for in case of future problems.
Here are some of the 60 coins that I bought. I suspect some of them may have been cleaned (they're pretty shiny for coins almost 80 years old, but the good ones seem okay. And no, none of them are supposed to have any silver content, just variations of bronze, nickel, copper and brass.

Why could it not be that only the album was made in China, and a Pakistani (or Indian) collector filled it? And keep in mind, China is Pakistan's largest trading partner

Well, sure, I guess I'm not too worried any longer that THESE particular coins are fake. I was just wondering in general...

The quality of a fake coin depends entirely on who (if anybody) the counterfeiter was trying to fool:

(a) tourists
(b) ordinary people who used the coins in everyday commerce
(c) collectors

Tourists are the easiest to fool, since they have no idea what the local coins are supposed to look like. Ordinary people are next; the fake only has to look "good enough" to pass a casual inspection.

Coins made to fool collectors are the most dangerous, since they've usually put a lot of time and effort into getting all the details just right. But "collector fakes" of common circulating coins aren't likely.

Baber definitely possible real coins are in there. That said I would have had the same reaction with all the fakes that come out of China
