Hoping for some feedback from the group in regards to this 1964 dime I came across while roll searching. While I don't take the best photos, I feel this picture is representative of what I'm questioning.

Specifically, between the "S" and "T" in "STATES" up until the middle of the "M" in "AMERICA", the coin in hand is silver-white on the reverse, while the rest of the reverse is a dull-grey. The obverse of the coin is silver-white.

1964-Dime---PMD-Or-Something-Else?

Is this PMD in your opinion, or is this a lamination error?

Thanking you all in advance for any feedback!

Interested in hearing what this one is. I'm not sure. I do not think this is post-mint damage though.

I'm curious about this one, too.

My first thought was that the coin is partially coated with something because the grayness is also on the rim. So it could be environmental damage and the shiny part was somehow protected....but I'm just guessing.

Thanks for the feedback @mycrob and @Buddy. I'm not sure I'm going to get an answer so quickly on this mystery. With that said, whatever it is ... this coin is finding a place in my heart!

I'm with Buddy, sorry to say but the second sentence.
"So it could be environmental damage and the shiny part was somehow protected". I have seen hundreds of coins frosted like that and decided to try to clean one just to see and not saying you should but the shine came back across the whole coin.
You should provide a pic of both sides of the coin though
Rest in Peace

susannyny I know what you mean when you wrote that the coin was finding a place in your heart. I have found more than a few that I am quite attached to.

If it is not "Dear to ones Heart"
Dip it into either a soapy type (safer) jewelry cleaner
or some Tarn-X (wear gloves and glasses) with this one as it is caustic and will also stain your stainless steel sink among other things. Then rinse off in cool running water
and pat dry with a soft clean cotton cloth. Then you can go from there on figuring if the coin had some sort of coating on it or just some toning.
