Well I just got back from depositing a cheque from the bank. I withdrew 200$ for my savings jar and amongst the bills was a 20$ with a dot infront of one of the serial numbers.

Can anyone tell me if this is PMD..error..replacement note..or whatever it is..AND what it might be worth?

Huh. I've never seen that before. Is the dot the same colour as the ink of the serial numbers? Looks like it on my computer screen but in hand it would be easier to tell. If so, maybe a replacement note?

yes, the dot is the same color ink as the serial numbers. It looks printed on, not added on after...so I dont think its PMD

I can't contribute anything worthwhile regarding the dot in front of the serial, but the last shot is a great example of the EURion constellation included on a lot of bills from many countries.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation

This is an anti-counterfeiting technique that supposedly stops color printers and scanners from processing an image of modern currency. Your knowledge has now been expanded, hopefully.

First time I've seen this. While it probably won't get much of a premium, I'd keep it.

May be just an innocent droplet of ink. Are there any other similar (perhaps) errors of this type?

My thought as well. I've seen the ones with solid bars where the digit was completely missed but it was usually part of the number itself, not outside of it.

That "spot of ink" comment jogged my memory a bit. Seems I remember years ago getting $20 bills with random green dots (one of the then-regular ink colours) on various places on the bills. Not very often, mind you, just every once in a while. I didn't know what caused them; I just figured a stray drop of ink. But I never heard any explanation for those dots one way or another.

The random dots you are referring to were supposed be a way to distinguish authentic banknotes according to what I was told years ago. I don't know if that was a myth or truth.

That vaguely rings a bell, ikandiggit. That would mean that all bills back then had those stray dots. I admit I can't remember if they did or not; I didn't really notice because I wasn't a bill collector back in the day (or now). The only bills I had were a pair of $5's, each with alternating 4's and 5's for serial numbers. Crisp mint shape, too. >Sigh< Wish I still had them. (lol) Anyway, all my reminescing doesn't solve Imohtep's puzzle though. Guess we're still no further ahead on that front.

Could it be that the dot was placed there by a Police Department where the money was to be used in a sting operation? Often times bills are marked by Police so that it can be easily identified and used in court.
