I would like to purchase a couple thousand dollars in dimes for face value. What exactly is the beset way to do this? Does anyone have any experience with doing this and could give any advice? Also how did you go about depositing the coin back into you bank?

Getting it is easy. Just order boxes ($250 a box) from your local bank. You might need a business account to do this.
Depositing them can be more tricky. Might want to find a branch with a coin counter.

I echo Steve's advice. I buy them all the time from one bank chain and return them to a totally different bank chain. I have personal accounts at both of them so there are no charges to me for ordering the coins. The bank I deposit them in has a coin counter and the tellers run the coins through the counter. They haven't charged me a fee yet for doing this, but that could be because I take them all baked cookies / breads twice a year. They all know my name and are always very nice, even when I show up with $500 bags of half dollars. I suspect after I leave when I drop off a bag or two of halves the teller that got stuck with me curses her luck.

You could call a bank and get the correct answer, much quicker.
To answer your question...it depends on how big or small your bank is.

I doubt if even very many commercial banks have that quantity on hand, much less your local branch. One or two boxes should be doable at most banks but sixteen of them will definitely require a special order and probably a business account as well.

well from whom do banks purchase their coins from? Can I just order from the same people? The problem is that I don't know what organization distributes massive amounts of cash to give to customers

Banks get coins from the armored carrier companies(Brinks, Dunbar, Loomis, etc) but they do not do business with the general public. Even if they did, do you really want an armored transport pulling into your driveway with an armed guard wheeling a dolly to your front door?

When I started buying dimes 5 years ago, I could order multiple boxes from banks that I held no account at. Not many roll hunters then, let alone dime hunters. Later I opened multiple accounts and ordered many boxes at a time, as tellers become short tempered if you constantly ask for in-house dime boxes. Later I switched to cust rolled dimes and could easily purchase $1k-$2k every 2 weeks between 3 banks. I had a sweet setup where a credit union supplied me with coin lok bags, I filled them and immediately received my cash, never depositing (therefore no paper trail).

Quote: you never deposited all those dimes? Never once. In fact, I've bought well over $100,000 in diff denoms, never depositing any of it. No need to. If I didn't use it to buy coin, I'd spend it.
