So I saw an ad on TV for this coin...
https://www.2012fiftydollarbuffalo.com/

I bet you could use this $10 coin to buy $50 worth of gas just about anywhere. Of course this would be dishonest.. and I would never try.. but I'm sure some cashiers would take it.

What can you see on a coin that you can use to determine if it is legal tender or not? It says "e pluribus unum", "$50" and "in god we trust".. those 3 things make it look pretty legit. This one says "COPY" on it.. so a smart cashier might refuse it, but I bet you could get it past more than a few.

The copy doesn't have "$50" on it. Trying to use it as currency would be a felony offense also. It's unlikely to be accepted and a sure ticket to a jail cell if you tried.

I've had difficulties using Kennedy half-dollars at stores in my area -- the cashiers didn't believe they were real money.

I would think getting this piece accepted would be a long shot and, as noted by BH1964, trying to pass it could very well get you in trouble with the law.

OH.. youre right. In the commercial they show the genuine coin that DOES say $50 on it. I just noticed this.

So, would it be illegal to try to spend a genuine $50 gold buffalo? or more realistically a silver eagle? that isn't really "currency" either.. How can you determine what is legal tender and what is not?

Every coin struck by the US Mint is legal tender whether it was intended for circulation or not. So, a silver Eagle, for example, is legal to try and spend though one would be foolish to do so for its face value of $1.00 considering its silver melt value.

All US silver, gold and platinum bullion coins are legal tender, all clad, silver and gold commemorative coins are also legal tender.

Bays spending a real gold buffalo or silver eagle is perfectly legal. While they are much more valuable than their 50 dollars or dollar they are actually legal currency

Is it illegal then to use a canadian coin in the states? obviously this isn't a big deal because they circulate all the time even though they arent "legal tender".

This thing was not made to pass as a coin. It is a piece of junk made to part suckers from a $10 bill (plus inflated shipping charges). These are not advertised in Numismatic publications, only on TV to try to get people that know nothing about coins to buy one. They even have a "strict" ordering limit to add some urgency to the purchase.

Bays while canadian coins arent legal to use in the states it does happen especially with pennies when they dont really get checked if it looks close enough. Some places may just actually accept them which they can if they want to but arent required by law. Each place can legally accept whatever they want for payment with in reason, no sex or drugs ect
