I finally obtained the new Presidential dollar out of curiosity. I am not impressed with it really. The coloring looks great, don't care for the presidents, and the sides are very hard to read. I do like the reverse of the coin however. I would have preferred the date and mintmark on the obverse though.

I agree. When the mint 1st introduced the side writing, I thought it would be a nice change, but now that I see it, I don't like it. It is very hard to read

I picked up 2 rolls at the bank during the week. I opened one and gave 8 of them away so far. I think they're nice, but I'm not crazy about them. They'll have appeal to collectors because they're a series, but I don't expect they'll circulate any better than the SBAs and the SACs. I think the size is wrong. Eventually when our coinage denominations are revamped to meet our modern day needs I believe the dollar coin will be the size of our current dime.

I like them myself.....At least they have a President on them. I was never a fan of SBA's or the Sacagaweya, even though they may have something to do with the history of the USA, a President or Liberty has more instant appeal to me as a US coin as opposed to the last couple dollar coins. Just my opinion though.....

I like them...Mostly because they've made me quite alot of money. I live in jacksonville, FL, and we have the variety here without the edge lettering...I've made quite a bit selling them on ebay.
Rest in Peace

I spent another one just 15 minutes ago at Walmart.

The clerk was most excited and said she really liked "those new gold dollars!"

TSmith3510, you mention that a dollar should be about the size of a dime. I agree, at 2.5 grams a Mercury dime should be worth somewhere around a dollar melt value. But the mint insists that we use a coin that weighs 8 grams or so and the melt value is worth maybe 5 or 10 cents? Part of the reason for coins to begin with is portability and value. No wonder we are going to electronic transactions and people insist on keeping bills. Does anyone else agree?

NDS,
I most agree with you I am not impressed at all looks like there should be candy inside, the mint must be real hard up for a good coin design.

Bruce.
