Hi, I bought four coins at a coin store yesterday. They are foreign coins and cost 20 cents each. One is very interesting, but I can't figure out what country it comes from. It is a 5 Ore, and my Grandpa says it might be from Norway. What makes it strange is that the words and the crown design are pushed down or indented into the coin. Someday I will buy a world coin book, but right now I need help. Can anybody tell me where this coin is from? Thanks. Bye.

Hi Coin Girl, your coin is a 5 ore from Norway. I have posted some examples of this coin below.

Sounds to me like it's a coin from Sweden. They do that with their coins. The 5 Ore on the right is the older larger style. What year is yours? I think it's a clever idea to indent the image onto the coin. The wear must be far less on the details.

So it is the larger 5 Ore Style.

The 1970 mintage was 29,420,000. The coin is made from Bronze.
The King was Gustal VI from between 1950 to 1973.
This style coin was minted from 1952 to 1971.

Well done, Toast! I was convinced it was the Norway one, but your pictures have proved me wrong.
Coin Girl, that is a very lovely coin. Good purchase!

Snooba, I was impressed by your collection of coins from Norway.

The "indented" clue made me think Sweden straight away.

Coingirl, I love the coin with the moose on it. I'm gonna have to look at my Norwegian coins to see if I have one of those. If I don't have one yet, I'm gonna need to get one! I really like the Scandanavian coins. Do you have any from Iceland yet?

Do a search on yahoo usually results in what you are looking for when it comes to coins. Has at least worked for me several times. I put in
ore +coin and came up with this
http://stores.ebay.com/ERICS-STAMP-...ftidZ2QQtZkm
which answered your question.

Coin Girl, that "indented" style is called incuse, and I've always loved the look of it, especially on some of the old $5 and $2.50 US gold coins with the Indian Head design. Like this ...

Coin Girl and Coin Boy,

I posted some pics in a previous topic for you also. Sorry I didn't notice your new thread until now, but it seems as if you found some info.

If you look back in the Buy of the week thread I've included some pictures for both of you.

Snooba -- Thank you.

ichirensha -- not yet, but I hope to.

wardtom084 -- Thanks for the suggestion.

Auldfartte -- My grandmother bought a 2 1/2 dollar Indian, and I got to look at it before it went to the safety deposit box at the bank.
