Hi everyone. I have a coin or may be a token I dont know exactly what it is. On one side there is a lion standing on his back feet rasing a sward with his right front foot and holding a shield with his left front foot. The writing says "MONETA NOVA . THVRICENSIS" On the other side the writing says "PRO DEO ET PATRIA 1700"
I'll try to post pics for it but I'm sorry I dont have any right now.
Thanks

Yup, that's the one. Zurich (Swiss canton) 5 schillings 1700, silver (fineness unspecified), about 25mm diameter, KM# 115.
What book is the scan from, tights?

Uh oh. I have no clue to be honest. Did a google search on one of the parts of lettering. I will look for it again. I wish I had a book like this, but it is probably more than $100. I have a hard time parting with that much cash right now when the info is online..... UPDATE One of the links on google sent me here, which is where I copied the page from: A Descriptive Catalogue of Swiss Coins in the South Kensington Museum By Chauncy Hare Townshend, Reginald Stuart Poole, Victoria and Albert Museum This was another nice link that gave me some info, but didn't get me all of the way there. This is from typing in the "Moneta" part. http://someoldcoins.org/saur/g/s112.htm

Thanks tights24 for the info, I went to the link you gave me but I didnt see the coin I have, I called my grand mother, she lives in England, to ask her from where did she get this coin, since shes the one who gave me this coin as a gift. She told me that she had it as a gift from the mayer of Switzerland when she was there.
By the way the coin is placed in a silver small dish "the coin forms the base of the dish". I'm working on the photos right now to try to decrease their size in order to be able to post them.
Thanks for your help you and Sap and I hope that you can send me more info or links so that I can be able to know the history and value of this coin
Greetings

Sorry, eg_collector, I can't find an exact match online. This one on CoinArchives is as close as I could get: It's an older, more expensive variation of the same denomination (listed as KM# 85); CV of this one is $150 in VF condition, yours dated 1700 is valued at $40 in VF. If it's been soldered, bent or otherwise damaged by mounting it in a dish, it's value as a collectable coin will be reduced. The main differences between KM# 85 and KM# 115 (apart from the date) are the shape of the shield the lion is holding, the presence or absence of the sword and the ornamented pattern around the reverse.

Here is the best I could get "The bluring due to light reflection if very frustrating" This coin is Zurich (Swiss canton) 5 schillings 1700 according to tights24 and Sap. I got it from my grandmother as a gift, she had it as a gift from the mayer of Switzerland when she was there 60 years ago. The coin is placed to form the base of a silver dish that has a number "3565" on its back in addition to other stamp and number of silver finess. I hope that you can find me more information about this coin history and value. I'm not sure about the grading but I think its UNC Thanks Image: Obverse.jpg35.9 KB Image: Reverse.jpg33.5 KB Image: Silver Dish 1.jpg31.47 KB Image: Silver Dish 2.jpg24.26 KB

Interesting. I will try to dig into this a little more for you. Your latest pics are very dark. Can you use a flash when taking these. While certainly not the preferred method, maybe that will at least add a little light. I honestly don't know how the value would be affected with it "mounted" to the bottom of a bowl. I would think that the bottom of the bowl would show some wear, unless the coin is not the thing making contact with the surface of whatever it is resting on.
BTW, your first two pics are much better than this last batch. A little blurry, but much better with the lighting.
I will try to find some more info if possible.

Much better pics.
However, I looked around last night for a little while and I was unable to find out any more info. Unfortunately you have a nice coin in the bottom of a bowl, and that's the extent of what I can find. I tried looking for info on special presentation items etc and found nothing. Sorry I can't be of more help.
Maybe someone else in the family has more info for you?
