I recently completed a trade and this arrived in today's mail. What grade would you assign?

Looks AU-58, very minimal wear. A bit baggy and looks to have been dipped.

AU 50. not gonna lie though. appears to have been toned or cleaned based on the many scratch marks on it. melt value is like 800 give or take. nice coin though. one of my favs. what did you trade for?

Trade was for my 1906 G$2.50 in NGC/CAC MS64. It does have signs of a light cleaning but looks better than my images reflect. Any more comments/grades?

Based on the abundant luster, I would say this looks like a really baggy MS coin. I'll say MS-60 but probably worth AU type money.

Decent frost on the portrait, no definite wear that I can see, and lots of scritchy marks in the fields plus some hairline scratches. I think it's a bottom-end MS coin, so MS-60.
The PCGS price guide shows the 1906 quarter eagle in MS-64 at $965 while the 1885 eagle is worth $995 in MS-60. So, you traded pretty much straight across per the price guide. However, you now have 4X the amount of gold which might turn out to be the better store of value. Food for thought!

Thanks for all the grades and comments! This trade was a bullion play for 0.484 toz of gold. The seller was an NGC board member who told me up front that NGC had rejected the coin for residue (PVC). He even sent it to me in the bodybag. 99% of the PVC has been removed with acetone and a light cleaning (before I got it). If you look at the pic below you can see where a spec of PVC has etched itself into the surface and could not be removed. My grade was AU+ Details - Cleaned/PVC Residue.

Wow, I would never have guessed there was PVC damage on this gold coin. Actually, I never knew PVC would damage any gold coin. Guess you are never too old to learn something.

Perhaps there is only a tiny amount of wear on the high points of Liberty's hair, and on the eagle's feathers over the eye, and perhaps on the leading edge of the wings.
Lots of very tiny nicks in the fields of both sides, but for the grade, that is not a problem.
The pictures help to grade accurately. My compliments in this regard.
I don't consider the PVC etching? on gold? as a real problem. From the pictures, if you had not told us, there is a strong possibility that it would have been missed by me.
Eye pleasing, handsome looking coin.
AU58.
