A couple months ago I started a project to give me a break from chasing coins. I decided to put together a set of small one dollar notes, from 1928 to date.

For me I decided my collection would be based on just series/signature. With a few exception, I would include a Hawaii and North Africa note and the experimental 1935 A notes. I know there are other varieties and different district banks, but I do not want to get into every possible note.

For the album I purchased two Dansco albums and combined them so that I would have enough pages.

Once it is complete it will have at least
1 - U. S. Note red seal 1928
24 - Silver certificate
24 - Federal Reserve Note

There will be more because in some slots I have more than one bill. Some slots have Stars and some consecutive serial number notes. I have 8 more bills coming in from ebay this week, so I think I will have 7 more to complete every slot.

Interesting thing to do. I have had a few silver certificates in my life, and I understand some are quite valuable.

Did you know that at one time the US had to deliver a dollars worth of physical silver for a silver certificate? Imagine if they had to do that today.

That's great! I did a type set of my own but I did mine was from 1900 to present. However my set doesn't have all the series/dates and stars, just the design types. I really enjoy my set and am glad I did it. Keep us posted on your progress - it will be nice to see it completed.

Nice looking set. Does the pages offer good protection for the bills? I'm always wary of soft currency holders.

That is a good question, Dansco does say they are safe.
I bought the first album about 18 months ago and have had bills in it with no ill effects.

The Dansco currency albums and additional pages are getting harder to find. One site says they are out of stock because " I was told there is an issue getting the right quality vinyl used to make these pages."

But yes you can add pages when I combined the two albums I have 18 three pocket pages and one (one pocket) page that I use to put my printed index page (from spredsheet)

A lot of your notes have interesting "cuts" and off-center issues. Like the silver certificate underneath the United States Note has a "T" in the top-left corner and a bar in the top center. Are those cutting guides? Or...?

That United States Note: if it's scarse I would leave it as it is in the collection so that its value doesn't get blended in with the rest and it's obvious that it was harder to come by. Great presentation, by the way. I need to get a currency album like that.

Good question, maybe some of the experts will post a answer

I have noticed some of my notes are off center. I am not sure if the marks you mention are alignment marks for the printing or cutting .. or neither

A lot of the early notes are off centered since the printing technology was not advanced. And I think (don't quote me on this) that many notes were printed on a large block with cutting guides. Very much like stamps, there are letters to indicate which position the bills are from. Of course these were not supposed to be on the bill itself but they may have been cut by hand. Which leads to miscut and off centered bills.

Great idea for a collection and it is very nice! Please keep us posted.

So how did you come up with the 24 each for the SC and FR notes? I'm looking for ideas on how to collect a currency set myself. Especially something that won't break my bank account.

I put mine in currency pages and store them in a loose leaf binder.

I am pretty sure I started my list from a list another member posted here on CCF. Then I bought a book Guide to small U.S. currency and modified my list.

My list basically is one of each series. for example
1928
1928A
1928B

I did include four additional 1935A notes
Two 1935A experimental notes (red R and Red S notes)
also a Hawaii and North Africa note.

To make this set more basic, a person could drop these four notes above. Or even drop the 1928 red seal and just make it Silver certificates and Federal Reserve notes.

Once I get my E bay notes in this week, I will need 6 more notes. Of course those 6 notes will be the the ones I feel will cost me the most.

Here is the list I am working on

Series Type Seal Signature
1928 USN Red Woods/Woodin
1928 SC Blue Tate/Mellon
1928A SC Blue Woods/Mellon
1928B SC Blue Woods/Mills

I did change this album. There will be 20 Silver certificates and
24 Federal Reserve notes.

The new changes makes this album much easier to put together.
Now I only need four more notes to complete it.

I moved the red seal one and the Hawaii and North Africa notes
to my second album
