If you want an investment that will make you money steer clear of coins, Bullion would be the way to go.
I don't know many collectors that have Fat wallets from collecting coins, On the contrary most of us end up with empty wallets

I have been doing that for a year or so,
The only problem I have now is that I could never sell my Morgans, Peace dollars,Franklin's or walkers
The good thing about an empty wallet is that it fits in your pocket better anyway

I think the best "investment" area in U.S. numismatics would be pre-1814 damage free original condition coins in TPG slabs. These coins are just plain rare and I see very little down side risk in them. Go to a coin show and see how many you can find.
I don't look at silver and gold coins as an investment, they are for insurance against the falling value of the dollar.

There no one area of numismatics that consistently out performs any other area of numismtics, when it comes to investment performance.

It varies from year to year, decade to decade.

Same applies to any other area of investment, be it property, shares, bonds, etc.

Can't go wrong with keys. These coins will always be in demand with collectors.
I usually purchase lower to mid grade coins as they will be easier to move in the future. The ones I own now, have increased since I've owned them.

Either bullion or a really expensive old very high end coin you could sit on for a year or two and hope to resell for more at the next auction

Key Date Morgans, Peace, Walkers, and Early American Key Coins. Stay away from purely Bullion related material.

As we can see, a variety of answers are coming through. Perhaps that is not surprising. I supspect that those who have answered so far, invest in an area that they enjoy and understand, or are learning about it.

One of the most important principles of investment is to fully understand what you are investing in.

In this case, if you don't really understand the area you may be interested in, do some research to find out. You will have a fun trip along the way, learning as you go.

I am interested in ancient and World coins. I am still learning.

At current prices, silver is a better bullion play than gold. You get the most for your money with 90 percent.

HAHA! Tell me about empty wallets. That's the only thing I got a plenty of :P

Also I see that most of the replies encourage Bullion buying and American Silver Coins. I think I might start doing that. The only problem is my empty wallet :P

Almost a joke. If anyone knew the answer to that, they wouldn't be sitting here answering you. They would be sitting on their own private Aisland, with beautiful women fanning them with Palm leaves from their private forest.
Or they would be sitting in an air conditioned, private club, with people waiting on them for everything.
Your question is sort of like asking I want to get rich fast, what should I do next?
Coin collecting is like any hobby. Might be a decent investment and might just as well have you go broke or close to that.
This is a hobby. Not an investment thing.

justcarl, I know it is a hobby. I have over 1000 non American coins that I collected. They took a lot of time, effort, and money. I have over 200 American coins which aren't much but still a lot for me. I had to collect them too. I live in a country where it is very hard for coin collectors. Saudi Arabia. So I know and appreciate the coin collecting hobby. I'm only 18 but I have been doing this for atleast 10 years, which isn't much for some of the people here. My point is that you don't know me. And I don't see why you insult me for this question I asked earlier. So until you know me well you can judge me. Just for your information I'm not investing in anything since I don't have any money. I was collecting information for my dad as he might invest. Anyway Thanks for taking the time to insult me.
