OldSkoo:
Looks like there is corrosion in the field to the left of the face. There is also a similar looking area on the reverse above the one. These areas could have had verdigris that has been cleaned. Color is nice and dark as you want though I would be more inclined to go for a RB for this date. Wear looks OK for AU the only ding is the one on Liberty's jaw.
I would suggest you ask for better pictures, maybe with the coin tilted so you can see if there is any depth of damage in those areas I mentioned. At the price I would look for a better coin.

Appears AU50 Details/corroded. The slightly rough surfaces would indicate porosity.

VERY difficult to assess color by looking at an ebay picture. The color apperance of a coin can be altered easily, unknowingly and drastically by not having the color balance of the lighting correctly describing the coin. It may NOT necesarily be an intentional fault of the seller to do this.

A very nice coin. Looks like maybe some rim dings around 5 oclock or so. With the other problems mentioned, I wouldnt go 250. Definitely think its more like an XF details. I would offer 200 at most. Thats the listed value for a VF. If that were a problem free coin, 250 would be a deal.

The seller said they'd take $225, but I think I'll pass. They said the color is accurate, so it does have surface corrosion. This is a coin I don't want to buy twice (Except for both varieties).

You might want to keep an eye on this one on Sunday on Teletrade. It's in a PCGS slab and looks problem free, plus it's a small date. It took me a little while to find a decent example of this date too, be patient and avoid problem coins if possible. http://www.teletrade.com/coins/lot....303&lot=1032

i have an 1857 (N4, small date) in XF45 (PCGS) and it isn't even in the same ballpark as the coin in the auction. Pass on this one - there are a lot of problem free 1857's out there.

As already well stated, pass on this one.
