XF details IMHO but certainly damaged on the chin and other small areas. The reverse is much cleaner but (my) left wing has a deep intrusion of some sort unless someone wants to tell me that's a die mark anyhoo, your grading opinions if you please and also, what would you pay for it? That's a surprise answer I'll save after I hear a few posts. The sale is very much public information on the bay.

Looks EF-40 details to me based on the dark photo. Not sure how bad the surface is but if the coin isn't bent or heavily corroded it's not that bad. The chin nic is noticeable but not extreme. If you got it under a 100 bucks you probably did okay.

Details are easily XF, close to AU. Does have some problems but still not too bad overall. $75 value.

Quote: Details are easily XF, close to AU. Does have some problems but still not too bad overall. $75 value nice but XF/AU is in the greysheet last issue for XF $200, AU $350. You think the damage is significant enough to reduce it to a $75 greysheet price? And please realize I am asking with all due respect as a novice trying to learn these aspects of the trade. thanks

The chin nick is one thing and the dark color another. Taken separately, they wouldn't be all that bad, but together they amplify to bring the price down. That being said, I don't have experience grading this coin type so I am basing this on the grades given by others.

With your added photos it does look like a nice coin. The two nics are an issue because they are in a very bad spot. If they were on the eagles wings or in Liberty's hair it would not be as big of an issue. You also have some scratches are the right of the date. The surface looks better in the new photos so that is not an issue. I'm still stuck on EF-40 for this coin and think with the problems it would retail over the counter for around $125.

As always, you guys are giving me such a great education and I am super appreciative for it. Here is the link to the winning auction for $36. If retail is $75 to $125 than I am glad I paid what I did. http://www.ebay.com/itm/18090595830....m1439.l2649

Even though the coin has some problems, it has more than enough detail left to make it a nice score at $36 Methinks the seller was probably a bit disappointed with the final bid

I'm fairly certain he was not happy but such is the chance you take at auction, no?
