What can I do without getting a details grade?
I don't want to do anything to change the luster, surface or tone. Those two statements go together; anything that perceptibly alters lustre, surface or toning is likely to be detectable.
With regard to your three suggested options:
Acetone - completely harmless to coins, when used carefully. Should have no problems. Do a forum search for "acetone" for more info on how and when to use it.
Mineral oil - also harmless, though pointless. They'd reject any coin with a foreign substance smeared all over it, such as paint, varnish or oil, so you'd need to get the oil off again before sending it in (acetone ought to be good for that). You don't really want to be putting anything on the coin that detectably stays on there.
Verdi-Care - I think the definitive answer is still "maybe". You'd need to check
the Verdi-Care thread for discussion on the
TPG's reaction to treated coins; some were passed, some were not. Verdi-Care is intended to leave BadThad's trademarked compound on the surface. Deep in that thread (page 24) he states:

I recommend rinsing the upper layer off with water, then acetone before submission because a skilled grader will mistake the coin as being oiled, which will get it rejected.
