Hi, I am trying to learn more about bank notes and figured that I would start with modern notes and work my way backwards in time. I can't seem to figure out what all of the little numbers mean on the notes. Here are a couple of pictures pointing out which numbers I am talking about. I also numbered them so that it will be easier to know which number you are talking about in your replies. If anyone knows any basic beginner websites with all of this info they would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you! This is all so confusing.

This page is for a $1 note. The layout is a bit different, but I think the numbers mean the same thing.

Fuzzy is correct, the numbers are the same.

1. The position the bill was on the sheet. F6 means it was on row 6 (F) and the 6th column (6).
2. and 3. The mint it was made at.
4. I think that is the plate serial number, but not 100% sure.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong.

Notes are not minted they are printed at the BEP.

Madmortician has confused the discussion.

1. The issuing Federal Reserve Bank (F6 is Atlanta).
2. Position letter and number for the face plate. See the link in Fuzzy's post. This is the fourth note down in the first column on the sheet.
3. Plate number for the face plate. This letter will always be the same as the letter in #2. The number is the plate number. The FW means this note was printed at the Fort Worth facility. Notes printed at the DC facility do not have an identifier so all you will see is the large letter and number.
4. The back plate number.

ok awesome I think I got it! One more question though, so the issuing bank and where it was printed are different? So there are 12 federal reserve banks that can issue notes to be printed, but they only actually get printed in DC or Fort Worth? Then I would assume they get shipped to the bank that requested them? Is this correct?
